Loosing Battle

How many other people are fighting a loosing battle with trying to get the house in order for Christmas this week.?
I work from home so in between working, taking the girls to school, you know - all the normal activities - I am trying to get the house sorted but to no avail. I made a big list at the start of the week with all cleaning jobs on it. The list is making good headway but everytime I complete a job the next day it looks like it needs doing again. I swept and washed my wooden floors yesterday but this morning I see bits of wet grass, ballls of fluff and the dreaded tinsel bits. !!!!!
The bathrooms were gleaming but now like grubby again. I have friends coming on Sat and family on Christmas day. I think I am being anal and should just give up. What do you think ?????
I think I am driving myself insane !

You poor devil! I do sympathise as my house looks like a bomb has been dropped on it and I don't even work. I'm just reserving today and tomorrow to get it cleaned and then I'll give it a quick freshen up on Sunday.
Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

  • Why don't you leave it until just before your guests arrive and then give the floors / bathroom a quick going over. Just make sure everyone knows not to walk on them or use the bathroom until your guests have arrived!!!
  • Why does the house have to be cleaner than usual ? I'm sure your house is clean all the time :) It's going to get covered in ripped wrapping paper/pine needles/chocolate wrappers/crisps/mince pie crumbs/red wine anyway :D

Relax and pour yourself a drink
  • Try it my way! I purged all 3 bathrooms last weekend, then informed the 3 other penguins that they weren't to use them again before Christmas. I have, therefore, gleaming bathrooms, and filthy penguins :D  :D  :D

Your right thriftlady. I am now stopping, going to put a face pack on and have a shower, then attack the ironing this afternoon while watching a film on TV. Dont know why the house has got to be spotless, usually I am not as manic. I think it has to do with my mother, she is housework crazy, I think she has a form of OCD. She looks for cobwebs when she comes over.
It annoys her that I am not as tidy and clean as her, she cleans for 2 hours everyday ! So because my family are here I have somehow decided the house has to be spotless. Not now I have had enogh. PaigeXX
  • Aha, now my mum has never been one for housework, so maybe that's why I have a 'relaxed' attitude to it ;)
  • My plan is to use table lamps or candles, instead of the main room lights, so that the house will look cosy and no-one will see the dust.

I too am struggling. MIL/FIL/SIL/BIL and 2x tiddlers coming for xmas lunch then Mum dad sis bil and their 2 littluns for boxing day. Just DH/DS and I here already. Last year we did so much travelling round to see everyone that we thought we'd take the easy option this year and have everyone come to us but not sure that it's going to be as straightforward as we hoped!

Bathrooms- will get a proper deep clean tomorrow then kept on top of with baby wipes (lazy but v effective)
Kitchen- kept tidy anyway so will just need to keep on top of it like normal
Living room- Dust surfaces, corners with feather duster to banish cobwebs (will be done saturday then just keep on top of it before onslaught)
Same with dining room and conservatory.

I really enjoy cleaning (never did until ds came along) but it's the tidying I struggle with. DH understands that Mon-Fri I am at work the same as him and so can't be expected to keep house immaculate, but what he does not grasp is that when I am at home with our 2yo DS (Friday/Sat/Sun) there is little time to be doing housework!

The bedrooms are where the real problems lie. We hardly ever use the spare room ( I am desperately trying to convince dh that this in itself is an excellent reason to start trying for my longed for baby #2!) and so this has become a bit of a dumping ground so needs a good 1/2 day tidying it up before I can clean it (not done since the summer :o o the shame)

The fact that there are at least 10 loads of washing piled up to do and we haven't properly unpacked our bags from our trip away this last weekend, just sort of tipped them out a bit to get at what we needed means that our bedroom is in desperate need of ast least a day tidying it too. err and I only have Friday Sat and Sunday to do the whole house and prepare xmas food/finish wrapping presents/ panic.

Think I will go and make a cuppa...
