I have two teenage girls and one of them is very untidy but both of them and my hubby leave a trail of disaster behind them wherever they go! My hubby will complain about the mess they make but he makes his own!

Its almost impossible to keep the house clean and tidy especially on top of everything else you have to do this time of year! So don't worry, just do the best you can and go deaf should anyone complain!
  • got the MIL coming over friday night and trying to get the place straightened by then!! our bedroom is a hell hole, the kids is just messy and the bathroom and kitchen need a good going over!! I only live in a 2 bed flat too dread to think what its like in a house.
Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts

Oh I think the candles are aGREAT idea. Will definately hide the dust. Also the baby wipes are great. I have stopped trying to clean for England now, I have had 2 large glasses of wine with some tuna and pasta for dinner and have been singing christmas songs with my DD's while waiting for OH to drive home from Scotland - flight cancelled due to fog had to get a hire car. This is what christmas is about - simple pleasures of family - not having a spotless house for when mother arrives to continue her hunt for cobwebs. !!

I've got MIL, FIL, SIL and BIL coming for Christmas dinner. TBH we've been tryying to keep the clutter and dirt down for the last few day, but it's really tiring after a day on your feet to come home and do the housework - it's not something I'd usually do. However, I've now realised that when they call throughout the rest of the year, they take us as they find us, so I've decided to chill!!

Will be working everyday now and finish at 5ish on Xmas eve, so I think I deserve my rest:snow_grin

PS - like the dim lighting idea. Might issue eveyone with torches!!

PPS I made my own pot pourri out of cinammon sticks, dried orange peel and cloves, so I'll give it a quick stir and put it on the radiator before they come to warm it through!!
  • DRINK is my plan. I have a houseful for Xmas, and, as ever, my house is (and always will be) a complete tip. I know now it will not be clean and sparkly for the 25th, so intend to produce the booze as soon as people cross the threshold and keep glasses constantly replenished.
My plan is to ensure my hospitality is so generous that guests are speedily rendered incapable of coherent thought, let alone observing the state of my carpets.
I have also created a splendiferous Christmas table centre piece, which will catch the eye rather than people gazing at the cobwebs.
My sole gesture to cleaning will be to light smelly festive candles, make sure the place is tidy and pour bleach over the bathroom suite 30 minutes before everyone comes.
If everything works, my guests, should they remember anything, will only remember what a wonderful time they had, rather than the appalling amount of dust on the banisters.
It's Christmas, anyway - I want to be coming up trumps with the Crimbo dinner and having a laugh, not being bog eyed with exhaustion due to mopping the kitchen floor at 3am.

  • Definitely agree with the other posts, it's not worth stressing about. There is too much extra stuff in our home at this time of year, it's normally bursting at the seams anyway despite numerous decluttering purges, it's a fighting a losing battle to try and keep any order here.
As long as there is the odd fling around with the hoover and a wipe around in the bathroom then proper housework in our home now won't be done until all the decorations are down and all traces of Christmas removed and packed away in the loft for another year.
Think I'll go and open the Bailey's now.
...it is not of more importance than daily life, which I have an enduring wish to make as useful and beautiful as possible.
