Most people will know that Aldi are selling their Tevion internet phone for £9.99 which they say allows you free calls between other Tevion internet phone users. What they don't tell you is that when you try and register the phone you need to put in your bank details and if you opt for the pay as you go option it will also take £10 of your card as a top up. You can then enter in a code to get £5 worth of free calls to non tevion users
The minimum therefore to start using the phone is £19.99.
There is however an alternative, buy the Aldi phone but don't register it. Throw away the software that was supplied and down alternative VOIP software from firms such as Skype(free download)
http://www.skype.com/intl/en-gb/download/skype/windows/helloagain.html
and calls are also free between Skype users but you don't need to enter in any bank details. You can top up if you want to to call non skype users inc normal phones etc. You can also add a Webcam and videocalls are also free
The Tevion is a rebranded Yealink USB-P1KH and if you go on their site
http://www.yealink.com/en/skypedown.asp
you can download the additional software that allows all its functions to work with Skype,VoipBuster, VoIPCheap, VoIPStunt, NetAppel, InternetCalls, SparVoip, VoipDiscount,MSN Messenger 7.0 or above,to name just a few
You can then talk to anyone of you friends for free as long as they have an internet phone and are using the same VOIP software such as skype etc
My friends are Emigrating to Austraila in a couple of months and they will take one of these phones with them and we can talk for free
These phone have been in Aldi for about a week but they still seem to have pleny of stock
I hope this helps

A VOIP Phone / Adaptor is a piece of hardware that allows you to use your internet connection as a phone line (V.oice O.ver I.ternet P.rotocol). This can either be free or extremly cheap. I use Tesco internet and can call Canada for 1p a minute and now as family has one, call them for free! With Tesco (and others) you get a UK telephone number provided with the pack (You can choose) I live in North Yorkshire but have a Glasgow Number (I'm from there) for my internet phone. People can call me on my landline using 01947 dialling code and my 'House' Phone rings or they can call me on my 0141 number and my PC rings. It really is quite good. It is a money saving marvel, you coud get rid of BT altogether by spending the £10 line rental you would save on 'internet calls' you could speak for around 15 hours a month!, No need for line rental or call charges, which could save the average house around £40-50 I would guess. Bear in mind you would still pay for your broadband though!
Hope this helps!0 -

can I just add a point to this thread. You dont need to buy a voip phone (saving £10) if you allready have a head set and mic. Just use the sites dialing software.
@ (gifteddante) I think most ppl need to pay line rental to have broadband.MSE:-)MoneySpendingExpert (-:0 -

Only if you have cable broadband. If you use ADSL for your internet connection you have to have a BT phone line at £11pcm.
I'd still recommend a voip router over the pc-phone though, especially if you can get one cheaply from staples. You are then free to use your (any) normal phone to make voip calls.ॐ Signature Removed by Someones Mum. ॐ0 -
