Hi there,

I have just received an e-mail from Powergen advising me that my Bill is ready and can be viewed on-line. I have just tried several times with no luck. Why cannot Powergen send the Bill with the advisory e-mail. Is there a problem with this? It would save a lot of time for all and would help to stop their site being swamped when e-mails are sent out!

  • Simply for security. It would have your name and address on there and would be illegal for them to send. By inviting you to view it online then only someone with the ID and password would be able to get in. Might mean people can still access it but is very unlikely and they would have to be very determined to do so!

Probably an error with the site, so just try later. Or, possibly everyone else is trying to access their bill at the same time and the server has fallen over.

It should be simple to exclude name and address etc and only send the relevant information. They do not include my name and address in the advisory e-mail.
If I was able to access the information I would be able to advise you of any savings which I might have made since I moved to them last year. I was advised at the time that I would save 26%, but expect it to be more like 16% taking into account their price increase this year.

I appreciate what you are saying here, but what I says still stands, even putting your name and address in the email would be frowned upon and is a security risk to yourself. Also, by getting you to log into the site, they can record logins and login attempts and record the IP address of the person logging in. This way, all the info can be used in any fraud investigations etc. Even this forum will log IP addresses, viewable to controllers and moderators. With email, this isnt possible and there would be a massive amount of people complaining 'Argh! I dont want you to send my bill, etc'.

If you havent been able to view your bill for a long time, then you should ring them. I would not be paying bills and I hadnt seen yet, no way! Have you told them you cant access it at all?

There's no reason (I can think of) why they cannot include a price indication of the latest bill. I'm with 1899 telephone they email me my monthly bill telling me what the total for the month has been.

    Detailed information can be excluded

For example it could take the form

    Dear Mr Jones

Your electricity bill for the last quarter has been published

    Account number xxxxx.xxxxx.x345
    last reading 3456 E
    This reading 3856 A
    kwh used 400 @ 10p per kwh

    Total for the period £40

I use to have the same problem viewing Powergen Bill, there is a help section on the website and I remember it was something with my broswer stopping me viewing them, I can't remember what it was so long ago but I followed there hints and fixed the problem and could view them no problems then...

Some reasons I can think of why they might not do it - as mentioned before the security aspect, the cost of introducing a new system that will interact with their billing system and then email you the amount without sending your personal details, additionally when you visit the website they can pop some nice adverts on there inviting you to buy some nonsense or other.

I always used to be able view my bill online but have had problems recently. I came to the conclusion that it was because I had upgraded to IE7, since when I tried on an older IE6 PC it worked fine.

They look like they've now added a 'Download Actual Bill' link which does work OK for me in IE7.

Same here. Mind you, there's a good reason for that: I don't have bills, I've been on Staywarm for years and have never registered for online bills!

Powergen had the usual trouble understanding the explanation, giving several 'standard answers to different questions' but finally seem to have stopped sending them.
