Can someone please tell me what this roadside box is?

It is about a third of a mile before a speed camera - I don't know if it is connected with it.

It looks like a Royal Mail “pouch”. It's where posties have their delivery mail left so they do not have to carry it all round in their bag for the whole walk. If you look you will see that the yellow side is a very poor paint job and nothing like the proper reflective plates that are used on official street furniture inc Gatsos etc.

Someone is having a laugh to try and put the wind up unsuspecting motorists that they are passing a speed camera. Or they may just be trying it as a ruse to slow the traffic down.

    On a dual carriageway?

I'm not suggesting it's anything else, as i have no idea, but I'd be surprised if it is one of those.

With the location of the induction loops so close to the box it would suggest it is something to do with these. What is further down the road from here? A junction or traffic signals?

On the side, a box like that should not be that close to the road with protection. It needs a safety barrier, or other safety measures.

  • There are loads of these throughout the country. The roads round about us are all A class roads and I see hundreds of them when I drive anywhere.

I have a feeling that they may be used for powering mobile speed cameras and setting up temporary cameras that they use to catch folk in roadworks etc, but don't quote me on it!

May just be a counting loop. Local authorities are required to monitor traffic levels on key routes, and automated counts are the usual method (with some manual verification)

Going by the design standards, I suspect that a barrier is not required as the post it's on will deform fairly readily, although the design standard changed only a few weeks ago!

    I'll get my hi-vis coat!
