Can't shut computer down

Options
hi! please help ... when i click start - shut down. Then I get the box to shut down or restart - I click shutdown- NOTHING happens! The computer just hangs and I have to switch off manually on the base unit.

I am running windows me and have done a recent virus check and adaware.

Its driving me (almost) insane because when I stat my computer it starts running scandisk.
It's better to travel hopefully than arrive...

  • Do control-alt-del when running windows and see if something is running that is causing a conflict. Not sure with me but in Win98 the only things that must be running are systray and explorer.

Have seen this caused by the MS Office Assistant (that paperclip thing or dog or whatever you choose) - so if running office turn off the assistant unless you really need it.

Not sure if these will help but is all I can think of!
  • Uninstall any programs you dont use.
    run scandisk , intensive.
    run spysweeper demo.
    run adaware demo.
    Clean up explorer.
    Clean restore to last save.
Go to trend micro housecall website and do a virus check there.
    defrag.

Now that should throw up any problems , if its fine after the above then thats you.If not then you need to manually check to see if a file or program is hanging , when its hanging like you say press ctrl alt del to get a list of programs running.

For each program highlight and select end program now , and wait to see if it will shutdown , assuming you had started the shutdown process as normal it will just jump to the usual shutdown.

The most common reason i find is either a viruskiller or network logoff.
  • if you still cant get it working, save all your important files onto cd or other means of storage device, and reset your pc back to *manafacture settings

*sorry one of those words i cant spell

  • See my post above margaret , try that.

If thats no good try it with any usb devices you have unplugged.

Lastly if still no joy try uninstalling the power management driver and reinstalling it.

Before you try anything. Go to windows update and see if there is a patch for this. I know there is a patch for W98 and this problem, not sure about WinME.

Then look HERE for Microsofts advice on this problem, it will walk you through a couple of possible solutions.

Don't go straight into reinstalling your operating system. With computer problems the same problem can be caused by many different things. It's a matter of elimination to find out what is causing your specific problem. ALWAYS TRY THE SIMPLE STUFF FIRST. You never know, it may even fix it!
