Depends what you think is fairly accurate! Spec states +/- 3% for Voltage and Current and +/- 5% for Power. Very useful device and they were only £4.99 when I bought one in July 04. Must be a supply and demand price increase, due to all of these recent price rises!

  • Was thinking about getting an Electrisave, which is about £60 but clips onto the main source and checks your whole usage.

[ Cheapest price is Ethical Superstore] at £61.50

It doesn't seem worth £60. Yes it's going to tell you how much you're using, but it's not going to save you anything!
  • True, but at least you can see where and what is causing the extra usage.

I agree it's a bit expensive but watching the money tot up would probably encourage me to switch off a few things.

With the electrisave you can't see what's causing the extra usage, it just tells you how much you're using at any one time. It doesn't tell you that the computer is using 200w or the fridge is using 400w etc.

The lidl devices are a much better option, you can check over a couple of days how much each of your appliances are using, so you know which ones are inefficient etc.

How, it's just like reading the meter as it will be measuring the total usage!

It is very expensive (not very MSE) and not as useful as the plug-in types as sold at Lidl or Maplin.

Apparently the Electrisave is sensitive enough to register when a single light bulb is turned on or off. It also has a display unit which you can put on the wall, on the table, wherever, and see your consumption in pence per hour at all times. I think this would be really helpful in monitoring when/how the money is going.

The LidL one only measures appliances with a plug, so you can't tell about the consumption used by lights, for example.

Where I live a local green group has got a monitor and offers free energy audits. Possibly some local authorities do this as well - everyone could ask their local Councils.

The plug-in version sold by Lidl is more sensitive and more accurate according to the manufacturers published specifications.

The plug-in version sold by Lidl can also be programmed with pence per hour rates and also includes programming of dual rate tariffs i.e. economy 7 times.

Surely this makes it more useful and things that are permanently wired such as light have wattage ratings on them. If you wanted to check the energy usage of your washing machine, with the Electrisave you would have to ensure that every other electrical device in the property was isolated, which is just not practical or convenient.

Fair enough if you can borrow one but they are defiantly not worth their ridiculously high purchase price. The Electrisave is simply does what your meter does and calculates the total cost based on the single rate programed unit cost, whereas the plug-in devices are much more useful and less green/gimmicky.
