Hi guys,
As I am a poor student paying £24pm for 1mb, I'm looking to move somewhere cheaper soon. I was initially thinking of signing up to AOL's silver package but then BeUnlimited caught my eye. I was wondering if anyone knew of any promotions that might/will be going on now or in the near future (for xmas maybe)??
Cheers guys. Awesome website by the way!:T

There aren't any deals, promotions or referral schemes with Be* anymore - these were stopped soon after O2 bought the company.
Its only £24pm for up to 24Mbps downstream, and 1.3Mbps upstream without any usage caps (basically the best your line can handle, dependant on the line length & quality).
If you want something a bit cheaper, and you know you don't usually exceed 4GB in a month, then take a look at Be Lite, which is £14pm for the same downtream speed, and upstream is 400Kbps. If you go over 4GB in a month, then its £5 for a further 5GB, so if you're regularly transferring no more than 4GB (or 9GB) then Be Lite might be better for you. If you regularly go over 9GB usage, then the unlimited package would be better for you.
If you're after something cheap, have you taken a look at ISP's like UKFSN or Freeola, or perhaps the combined mobiles & internet deals like Virgin & Orange.0 -
Actually, there are 5 computers in my house and so the usage is not exactly low. I was looking at my stats on NetLimiter for each computer and worked out that I transfer (up & down) about 30-40gb a month occasionally going over, it might be including some local lan traffic so I don't know how reliable that is. Anyway, I know that we aren't light users so I guess that leaves me with the following choices:
1. Be* 24mb @ £24, 3months notice for cancelling. According to them I am about 3.5km away from my exchange and can get around 5mbps. Anyone (maybe an employee) know of some offer/deal worth waiting for?
2. AOL silver 1mb @ £14.99, 12month contract with 1 month free and free router (which will be useful to me, old 1 dying). I may be able to haggle them down to a shorter minimum contract length.
3. Tiscali 2mb @ £14.99, 12month contract with free modem (could do with a router instead).
With option 3. Tiscali, is there any chance I can get the contract term reduced? I'm looking to be able to move around easily, if need be. I've read some not so good things about Tiscali service on adslguide in the past... but I was wondering what is there idea of unlimited usage with the fair usage policy?
I'm leaning toward option 2 as it seems to be the cheapest and most flexible( if i can get the min term reduced), but at the same time I read about people's speed being throttled down to 70k between 6pm-12am fromthe adslguide. So I guess they have some threshold regarding a fair usage policy too.
Anyway, some thoughts on option 2 and 3 would be nice.0 -

See deal here.
Why are you recommending Tiscali in this thread and then in this thread on the same day asking for a better alternative?
Everyone except you knows that Tiscali is NOT unlimited, as you have found out for yourself! Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Tiscali have been consistenly the most complained about ISP in the UK for years. They are reknowned for their abysmal customer service. I'm amazed that anyone thinks otherwise. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

I heard AOL are doing throttling of some sort, due to people exceeding their FUP - not actually read anything on it myself. I am told by those I know, that the support is not worth anything.
With 5 PCs hooked up, in a student place, I would go for Be* personally. You haven't got to worry about their FUP - people have said they have done 200GB regularly, and some doing 500GB in a month, and to anyone's knowledge Be* haven't warned or throttled anyone's connection. I haven't seen any effects of contention, and they pro-actively bought extra capacity before, but due to delivery timescales, they did get caught out and a few exchange suffered contention for about 3-5 days (not bad).
Is 1Mbps not a little slow with up to 5 of you downloading, gaming, etc - or is it mainly used for browsing/email? If you're edging toward AOL, just because of the free router, then are you aware Be* provide their router for free whilst you are still with them (a Speedtouch 716WL or 780). If the 1Mbps speed is OK, and there aren't any issues with their FUP, then they will probably be the better option for you.
Take a look at the ratings, and perhaps the comments in forums at ADSLguide & DSLzone. Be* is one of the more highly rated ISP's lately; 2nd of all those on DSLzone.

In terms of deals with Be* - their staff have said there are none expected.0 -
Cheers for that mhendo. Got me really mulling over Be* now...
I knew Be* came with a router, but didn't know which, cheers for writing the model, I'll read up on it now...
Thing is the difference between the two is nearly £10pm which is quite a lot, and as cost is a major factor in the decision (main reason looking to change current provider), I was thinking I'll go with AOL, albeit with a shorter contract and if the throttling is too bad I'll reconsider. If I could get Be* for the introductory £20pm when it first launched in Manchester, I would jump at the chance. Do you know if they still take payment quarterly; every 3months they take 3months of rental in advance?
Oh and out of 5, there are 2 computers hardly used so its mainly the 3 of us on at the same time; I think we are *just* getting by on 1mb lol.0 -
No, its monthly payments in advance now - so easier for those with a smaller cash flow. And the support is in Bulgaria now - not India; through an 0800 number.
If £24pm is stretching the budget a little, then assuming 25-30GB useage is your internet useage (ie some of that network traffic was internal), take a look at this option:-
Freeola - £14.99pm for first 3 months, on a 3 month contract, for upto 8Mbps with 30GB peak cap & 300GB off-peak cap
...as the price increases to £29.99, then after the 3 month's switch to another of Entanet's resellers...
UKFSN - same internet service as Freeola, but instead the ongoing fee is only £19.99pm.
Hope that gives you a few more possibilities.0 -

Sounds good, it was also refreshing to see Be*'s top rating on DSLzone. Not sure about the other companies though.
I think what I might do is go for AOL, as that offer will run out soon, because as you say there will be no deals on Be* so I will use that as a back up choice - assuming of course that I can get AOL to give me a shorter contract. If not, then I think I will go with Be*, as the other isps are either too small to consider or have some nasty surprises.
Also, a friend of mine just recently signed up to AOL so I will go round to his and test his connection out, although he lives 200m from his exchange whereas I am 3.5km lol. The netgear router looks quite good too...0
