Can anyone help I am a bit of a novice with computers, when I try to defrag it just keeps restaring with a error message that it has tried 10 times, and that I should close any open programs. I think I have closed down all programs and retry, but it still comes up with the same message.

You could always try defragging in safe mode. Press F8 while the computer is booting up to get into safe mode.0

If you`re running XP delete all your temp.internet files and right click on any icons in your task bar and close or exit them (firewall, anti virus etc)
Then go to start -accessories-system tools-disk defrag.
The main cause of "hanging" is a program ruuning in the background0 -
Didn't see this till tonight - if you are still having problems I asked the same question a few days ago further down this board!
Have a look at the "control+alt+delete" solution - worked for me!

Why are you defragging? In the olden days (5 years ago
) it was necessary to defrag Windows boxes because the way they stored files was pretty inefficient, but XP with NTFS is mostly self-maintaining.

But XP with NTFS is mostly self-maintaining.
LOL. My drives get well & truely fragged0 -
XP with NTFS is mostly self-maintaining.
That must be some kind of urban myth - my drives are all around 20% fragged at the moment. And they were defragged 3 or 4 months ago.
It's still something that needs to be done.0 -
try shutting down your firewall and anti virus while you defrag it works for me!0

try shutting down your firewall
At the risk of stating the obvious, make sure you are not connected to the Internet ...Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
@panda

Just to say thanks to Paul_BR, who answered the OP, having had the same problem. Went into safe mode and completed the de-frag, it took nearly 7 hours but that's probably down to the fact it hasn't been done for yonks!
Cheers
