Farepak Hampers in receivership

Options
Not sure if this is general news yet but farepak hampers have gone into receivership. Lots of people will have lost all the money they have paid in over the year and have a bit of a bleak christmas.

One of my friends is an agent. It is very hard to get any information, apart from a pre recorded premium rate phone line, especially about whether they will be able to get any money back. I doubt it would be in time for Christmas anyway.

As usual it's the hard up people that will miss out as this is the kind of saving scheme they would use. A lot of my friends customers are pensioners. She feels responsible but of course had no idea this would happen.

If anyone knows anything, or can say what might happen - please let me know.

I have never understood the attraction of these hamper companies. Wouldn't it be better to pay some money every week or month into a savings account and then use the money to buy your Christmas stuff. It must work out better value because some of your money in the hamper schemes has to pay for such things as agent's commission. Also I have found that the hamper invariably contains a few items which you don't want and so that's another waste of money.

A lot of people do hampers for a few reasons a lot of people wont get time over the xmas period due to work comitments and also who wants to go to a supermarket over that period is manic. As with everything there is of course up sides and downsides. There is never a right answer for this sorta questions, And a savings account could be good but a lot of people might not be able to get one for one reason and another.

You don't have to wait till the busy time to buy the stuff . Why not start a couple a month's before and buy a few things every week? If you visit any supermarket now (in mid October) you can buy Christmas cakes and puddings , frozen turkeys, plus all the other items which people usually have at Christmas.

With all due respect trisontana, these comments aren't very helpful to the countless customers who are worried about their orders. I use farepak to order vouchers for xmas as I am from a large family and simply couldn't afford Xmas otherwise. I have paid over £500 to my agent and am worried sick how I am going to buy my 3 kids their Santa.

I'm sorry this has happened to all these people , but surely if you can afford to pay for the vouchers you can pay the same money into a savings account with much less risk and probably get more for your money.

With due respect not a lot of people can get a savings account for one reason and another. And with hampers you know that you'll be getting what you've ordered and not be disappointed when you go to the shops over xmas, As I have stated there is no right or wrong answer for this. Different people have there different ways, A lot of people perfer to use hampers, some like to save in to a account.

I have tried in the past to use a savings account but found that if an unexpected bill came in it is all to easy to dip into this. As it is your comments are not very constructive to the people who have already paid out money to this company. Whilst I realise you were only offering advice it comes across as quite judgemental which you probably never intended, im sure.

I'm sorry if it came across that way , it wasn't intended that way but what I was really criticising was the whole concept of these schemes. They take your money over 12 months, don't pay you any interest and then when you get the hamper, it's full of stuff which is more expensive than if you buy it in the shops. I am afraid they are exploiting people.

How's this for an idea for these hamper companies ?:-

You pay your money to them every month in the usual way but this is put into a proper savings scheme which pays interest. The customer is not allowed to draw money from it but will receive either the hamper or vouchers, with added value because of the interest. Equally the hamper company is not allowed to touch the money until they are ready to dispatch the goods This way the customer has a proper savings account which they cannot dip into, and the money is protected until pay-out time.
