AND how do you make candied chestnuts pls?
  • I knew I would regret asking

Still, I guess those in HMP have loads of time to make HM Pressies :)
  • Whilst I don't make masses of them I do believe that creating personalised Christmas cards on the old PC is a great exercise - e.g. for close family and special friends.

My mum has a Sainsbury's cookbook calles "Food for Presents" by Patricia Lousada. It's sadly out of print but that had some great ideas including peppermint creams (easy for kids to make) a gingerbread house (and gingerbread gift tags written out with royal icing and tied in place with ribbon), rolls of cookie dough to be kept in the fridge ready to slice and bake, chocolate truffles and almond brittle. I can remember quite a few of the ideas that were in there (and they were great) but not how to make them. Sorry if that's not much use.

There are a lot of good craft websites with interesting ideas, particularly for knitting and crochet. They can be a bit hard to find under the deluge of tweeness and tat though. I mean hand crafting might be Old Style but there's no need for it to be granny style. Apologies to anyone if that's your bag but you will at least have no trouble finding that sort of stuff with a google search but a lot of, what I at least consider, the more interesting stuff I would never have found without the wonder of Stumbled Upon. Yes Firefox extensions rawk. Have a look at some of the Jetpacks I made if you like (kind of web scrapbooks). They aren't properly tagged and stuff because I just made them for my own reference. They will kind of work in IE but look well ropey, they look much better in Firefox. Crochet stuff, knitting stuff
Although I've seen patterns for some really nice stuff I'd love to make I don't think it is generally money saving unless you use recycled yarn.

I'm doing tablemats from my daughter this year. Just her pictures and then laminated for grandparents and so on.
