Yup I've just paid over £400 for my specs, that's just the cost of the lenses alone. I bought the frames off ebay for £34 including p&p. If I'd bought the same frames in the opticians, it would've knocked my bill up to £540
I know folks are using the net now to buy their specs, but my prescription dictates, I really should vist the optician. I guess there's only one positive, I can buy contact lenses from the net because the lenses I buy off the internet are exactly the same as what my optician offers me.
Anyone else in the same boat when it comes to buying expensive glasses??

flipping heck!!! I have a strange and quite strong prescription and every time I go for new glasses it's commented on as being unusual ( it has something to do with the curve of my eye, I don't understand it and have no desire too I just do the eyetest and wait for the comments lol) but I got my last glasses from specsavers and they cost me £79 for 2 pairs! Which optician are you using?0

TBH.. I found it better not to buy contacts via the net as it means I get my Glasses half price! So end up being a bargain really! I guess it's worth shopping around for "contact lenses by post" deals and weighing up the options of not being in a scheme "if" you wear glasses too.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 092

Like you I bought some frames for £15 from a company called specky4eyes on t'internet. They would have cost £130 in the opticians. I could have sent my prescription to them and they would have fitted lenses as well but I 'dithered' and thought it was best I asked my optician, which resulted in me paying £74 to have the lenses put in. Next time I'm asking my optician for my prescription and sending it to specky4eyes to do the whole job.0

It's the lenses which cost so much. My prescription is very high and I am a minus, I also have astigmatism in both eyes. I get the thinnest lenses I can and get an anti-reflection coating put on, but i still nearly fell off my seat when they gave me the bill. I now have to wait approx 2 weeks for the glasses to turn up.
I go to Rayners opticians by the way.0 -

fwiw you should try specsavers next time, honestly they are good. The have no problem dealing with strange prescriptions and usually take less than a week to get your glasses made up. I've worn glasses since I was 15 (i'm 31 now) and have used many different opticians, both chains such as vision express and specsavers, and independent opticians and IME Specsavers have been the best for price, customer service and professionalism.0 -
It's a rip-off in this country for lenses and frames.
I have a high prescription, and also go for ultra-thin lenses with coatings. I bought 3 pairs in Hong Kong recently, from the equivalent of our high-street optician shops. Two of the pairs were in designer frames. Total cost: £330, including FX costs. That's roughly what just 1 pair would cost me here. They were ready within 24 hours. And the eye-test was free (and thorough).
Opticians in this country need a kick in the bum.0 -
Guys, went to Poland/Warsaw.....took my three sets of frames.., got the lenses put, for 1/3 cost here..............!! Now its not quite the 1 day service, but usually doable in 3 days, plus he sent one pair to me by mail a week later!!

As I'm a regular customer at Specsavers I ask for, and get 10 - 20% discount on the price of my specs each time. Try it and see.....0

I know it's a lot of money, but I figure that if I spend £250 on a pair of frames and lenses and I wear them for around 14-16 hrs a day and have them for about 3 years, then it is actually quite good value for money! Although I might try an internet service next time and get lenses and frames all in for under £40!0
