Hi

My computer is running slow and get pop ups. I have tried

Mcafee
Mcafee stinger
Noaware
AVG (always had this running and Zone alarm
Trend Micro PC cillian
Pest control
Microsoft anti spyware

I ve run all these some worms etc picked up and spyware but I cannot upgrade any of these. I get a message as following:-

Error connecting to noadware server, please be sure you are connected to the internet and that no firewall is active that might be preventing noaware from accessing the internet

Same message whichever of the above I use.I have disabled Zone alarm

Which suggests I think I still have an infection any ideas please

runing that many for a start will not help.

stick with 1, keep it updated once sorted. run 1 antivirus, 1 firewall, adaware n spybot.

what does the scan pick up ?? what action does it say its took?

    what os you on?

  • Noadaware is a rogue product. Re-enable ZoneAlarm, they're obviously trying to collect personal data (and hell knows what else) and that's why they you want you to let the program access the internet!

    Do the following:

    1. Disable System Restore first.

How to Disable System Restore in Windows ME or Windows XP

    2. Next you will need to boot into Safe Mode.

How to start Windows in Safe Mode

    3. After booting into Safe Mode, run a full virus scan and let it clean your system. Run a full trojan scan too (ewido is a very good free trojan scanner). Then reboot back to normal mode and re-enable System Restore.
The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.

Sorry for delay been busy trying all suggestions

Thanks for your help. Sorry I was unclear, I wasnt running all that stuff at once, tried each one. Im on Windows XP

Turned off system restore and microsoft picked up a browser hijacker and got rid of it

Opportunity_cost thanks I did as you suggested but only managed to run microsfot software. Ewidos picked up - Infected spyware OTX media and cleaned it.

I have managed to update Mcafee, ewidos updated as soon as I loaded it.

I am left with the problem that I cant run a system restore in safe mode or this mode before todays date and I have annoying blue advert ribbon across bottom of Google homepage and what looks like a divider file under the google toolbar with ads on it from recently visited topics i.e moneysavingexpert, links, tips etc.

Any ideas how to get rid of these and do a system restore to earlier date. I think I still have something hideing in my system.

you wont be able to restore it back to an earlier date if you switched it off as it removes all previous saves.

if you say you anti virus is now up to date, with system restore off do a full scan.this should cure any viruses, etc. (which you said you have done)

then run an up to date version of both adaware and spy bot.

once your happy its clear you can switch sytem restore back on.

With the other it sounds like you installed some kind of toolbar maybe
  • weaver,

As m00nie says, run a virus scan in Safe Mode and with System Restore turned off (AVG needs version 7.0 to work in Safe Mode). Let it clean everything it finds.

Reboot in normal mode (keep System Restore turned off for the time being until you are able to get rid of all the nasties).

    Then install and run:

    1. SpywareBlaster
    - Check for updates
    - Enable all possible protections

    2. Spybot - Search & Destroy
    - Check for updates
    - Immunize everything in Immunize section
    - Check for problems
    - Fix any problems that are found

    3. CWShredder (stand-alone version)
    - Check for update
    - Fix
The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.

  • Hopefully one of the above will solve your problem. In the unlikely event of a failure download Hijack this from http://hjt.isecureit.co.uk/ save in its own folder and run a scan. Save the scan and post it on one of these sites for expert help in interpreting this.

    Hi

Thanks to you all Im 99% sure weve managed to sort it out.

My computor is running faster, Ive learnt a hell of alot. The shredder picked up 11 more problems and fixed them.

The horrid blue tool bar has gone from Google, and Im not getting ads when I open the internet. Thanks every one.

Internet explorer would not let me open the Hijacker file, but Im sure the problems are fixed.

One more question (sorry ) which anti virus would you recommend to have installed all the time.

Ive got Zone Alarm and microsoft on,also pest patrol at present(is spy bot better )
Should I opt for Mcafee, trend pc cillian or AVG version 6.0. What about the aware SW personnal I tried - this picked up lots of stuff. Its all so confusing. I was also impressed with ewido,
