Have you heard of St James's Place

Options
We are on the verge of investing £150,000 with a firm called St James's Place. Has anybody heard of them or had dealings with them. I felt fine with the company, but someone in our town said how much do we know about them, and apart from the FSA, we personally know nothing.

Any help would be appreciated.

think they are not totally independent, so do not look at the whole financial market.

    more here - http://www.sjp.co.uk/index.asp

so not total IFA - not great if investing 150k!

I find it really scary that you are on the verge of investing so much money with them.

Suggest you give it to me instead

Has anyone heard of this firm? We are not far away from investing a large amount with them. Today someone questioned how much we knew about them, and apart from being in the FSA, we do not know that much. We went to a seminar and were impressed with them.

    Any help would be appreciated.

They're majority owned by Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS).

    This might help :-

.... but bear in mind they invite you to seminars in order to impress you!

They're sound as far as I am aware ... but I do tend to turn down the frequent invites, owing to lack of time. Must take up the next one and see if I'm as impressed as you obviously are.

St James Place Bank is ..... but does that equally apply to other components of the Group?

St James Place is one of only two providers that refuses to participate in the FSA's site showing charges on financial products.

    https://www.fsa.gov.uk/tables

I'm sure you can figure out why that is.
    Trying to keep it simple...;)

Oh, make me do some research, huh! :D

HBOS group of companies includes St. James's Place Capital plc and St. James's Place Bank.

Unless they've changed ownership very recently they're 60% owned by HBOS and 40% publicly listed, and as mentioned are a FTSE-250 company.

A history of St. James's Place Capital, plc

Anyway, point being they're a large well established company that are highly unlikely to do a runner with anyones money. Though the IFAs won't be happy with anyone investing with them, of course :p
