I apologise for this complaint, but here we go. I should have and could have not posted this and just kept quiet but I just couldn't!
Why do people use the word "of" instead of "have", or even "'ve"? For example " You should of seen his face" rather than "you should have seen his face". I don't really know why this annoys me so much. Yes I really do need to get a life!

Haha it annoys me too, could of doesn't even make any sense. It's just because 'could've' sounds like could of so maybe people don't know that it should be have? Still winds me up though! In face when I saw the title of this thread in my head I went 'argh, it's should HAVE' !D'you know, in 900 years of space and time, I've never met anyone who wasn't importantTaste The Rainbow :heartsmil0

Yes, winds me up too, same as 'been instead of being' and
'can i get' instead of can i have' grrrrr doesnt make any sense at all.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

It's nice to know I'm not alone.
On reflection I wonder if it's because it's easier to text "of" than "'ve" and people have started to use it in everyday writing too?My favourite subliminal message is;0 -
Worst word in the English language: got. There is ALWAYS a better word to use.0

How about 'defiantly' instead of definitely? You see it all the time lately, and all I can say is !!!!!!? It's a whole different word!0

And there's a special schoolroom in hell for people who say 'less' when they mean 'fewer'. Oh, we're having pedantic fun tonight...0

We all know that common usage will turn our pet hates into standard English eventually, right? That's when I'll go live in France. Where they respect language so much they ossify it via statute!0

Thanks for this. I thought it was just me. In a few decades time it will be all "of" and no "have". We are a dying breed us pedants.

Yes! The SNP's election slogan is, "More SNP's - Less Cuts" and it drives me mad every time I hear it.
Has anybody else noticed how often people write, "lose" nowadays when they mean "loose"?
"Can I get" instead of "Can I have" is American. Don't get me started on Americanisms - some of them are infuriating. Like "fix" for "cook". There is an American film called Short Cuts where a character says something like, "Let me fix you a bunch of eggs" and I cringe every time I hear it. :mad:Love the animals: God has given them the rudiments of thought and joy untroubled. Do not trouble their joy, don't harrass them, don't deprive them of their happiness.0 -
Aieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!! Run for the hills. Is it a horror film?
