windows media player not working

We have a big computer and two laptops and for some reason none of the media players will work anymore. Any ideas?

I'm a bit concerned over WHY it won't open.

What happens if you double click a music file ?

Can you open it via start - programs - windows media player, or by navigating to c:\program files\windows media player\wmplayer.exe?

That would have me slightly concerned. As if it's not generating any errors there could be some corruption in your user profile, local files causing problems or possible spyware/malware infections.

Also could be the system hasn't been restarted, or you need Windows updates but I'd be tempted to try and find out the problem with WMP incase it turns into something more serious

I'm not ruling out VLC, as it's perfectly fine to use and lots of compatibility with other files, it's just things which don't work normally have a reason

I am concerned that 3 pcs are not working and no messages , hence suggestion of VLC, OP has not yet suggested if its just 1 medium.

    Eeek!
    I missed that one

If it's different medium, could be a Windows Update.

Anyway, will keep an eye on this post :)

Thanks for al the replies. Am not very pc savvy, and so tend to ignore the updates message as am paraniod it may be a virus or something. I wouldn't know if it was genuine or not. I tend to wait until one of the kids come to visit (and I remember) and ask them to check for me.
