Plusnet £25 cancellation fee

Options
Today I tried to cancel my plusnet broadband only to be to that I'd have to pay £25 to cancel due to the fact that I'm moving to Virgin, They say it's because bt will charge them to disconnect my phone line.

Any ideas if this is legal or how can i get out of paying it?????

It's nothing at all to do with LLU. Where did you get that from?

If a MAC is used to transfer to the new provider, the new provider picks up the Openreach charge.

If the service is ceased completely, the ISP has to pay for the engineer to remove the ADSL. The ISP can if they wish, pass this charge to the customer.

Legal and slightly more than Virgin charge (£23.50) for non MAC moves (that's non-cable Virgin), but both are less than Talktalk @£40!

http://www.ofcom.org.uk/consult/condocs/addcharges/pes/ - ‘Cease’ charges "If a customer decides to cancel a broadband service (and doesn’t plan to switch to a new company which also uses BT’s network) they may receive a ‘cease’ charge. This even applies if they have completed their contract. The company is passing on a charge which they have to pay, to BT Openreach."
