Glam's MFW Journey

I wasnt going to do a diary but it might help. I probably won't post often but will try to keep updating as and when I manage to get things done.

So, it was panic stations when I thought we might have to sell the house. Stupid mortgage advisor said we had no hope of getting another mortgage as OH was earning less and I was on mat leave just getting SMP. I had in my head that our rate went up to 7.2% in July - of course this was the SVR back in 2008, it's now 2.5%. I rang Lloyds who our mortgage is with to find that our payments will drop from £971 a month to £762 :j

I then started thinking about overpaying as I had done all my calculations (using the Budget Planner) based on paying the full whack.

I am now really excited about paying it off! I read another diary on here and had forgotten that for every £1 we borrowed we would pay back £X amount back (I can't find the paperwork to see how much)

So, as of this week we owe £160K but I think that includes an early repayment charge of about £4k. I'll call them in July to get a balance to see if that's right.

I have done a spreadsheet of expected income over the next few months and in July we should be able to pay off £1K, followed by £200 a month PLUS any extra money that we get.

I am doing Mystery Shopping, daily clicks, cashback and selling some stuff on ebay. My plan is to pay off even little amounts as and when I get it (I had forgotten about the daily interest). I just need to get the bank details so I can make electronic payments as and when.

My big problem is I owe my Dad £1700 and whilst there's no rush to pay him back I want to try and put aside £50 a month (I already have £600) so should have his money in 2 years.

Well, that's it really. :)

The mission - to clear the mortgage.
How am I gonna do it - eBay the clutter in the house, Mystery Shopping & Cashback and try to cut down on spending.
When am I gonna do it by - Realistically 2020 :o

So to start off my mission I am going to go around the house and make a list of stuff for eBay and I can car boot.

Going to take advantage of this weekend's free listing on eBay and get stuff listed although to be honest there won't be much that starts above 99p so might crack on today.

I have an assortment of baby things - some still brand new that I never got round to using :o. I'm keeping all the clothes for next time round.

Am also eyeing up the Rock Band which in a year has probably been used a handful of times.

I also have tons of books but might put them on Amazon - even if they only go for 50p a time it's better than nothing. :)

If it was me I would pay dad back £700 asap,You know he is not in a rush but that would reduce the money owed to £1000.Try and overpay the mortgage £250 one month and put £250 into savings the next month. You dont give your LTV or if you have emergency savings ?You could do with building up 3/6 months of income just in case.

I'm a bit dim when it comes to all this mortgage stuff :o

The LTV when we took it out was 90%, now its probably 87%

I have savings but these are only to cover me while I'm on mat leave and will pay the bills for March and April. I go back to work in May. OH has savings that we could use if we needed it.

I see what you mean about the money owing to my Dad so will give him £700 (means I wont feel the need to dip into it if its in my savings account) then I know its just £1k left.

I think I need to set up a joint savings account with OH as at the moment everything is seperate - that way each month we can transfer our spare cash over and either leave it in there or overpay on mortgage.

they just have them every now & then - usually I'll see it on eBay or sometimes it will be on HUKD or someone over on the Parent Thread will mention it.

    Thanks for welcome :)

Your LTV means you are unlikely to get a mortgage elsewhere but for the time being you are on a great rate ( at a good time in your life as on Mat leave)Now if you can save up that emergency fund, pay dad back and then overpay the mortgage by £200/250 a month, that way if interest rates do start to rise it wont hurt you as you are already overpaying and rates would have to rise to 8/9% before your mortgage payment increases
  • I will be reading you diary with interest good luck!
