BT Talk and Surf package

Options
Thought this looked quite good for £15.99 per month (plus line rental of course).

Have been paying Orange £19.99 for broadband alone since last year when they put their charge up tremendously.

Have always been a bit wary of changing, have a fear of getting billed by both old and new provider:eek:

Is it relatively straightforward??

People seem to have had good and bad experiences with most of the providers, so I suppose BT are as good as any.

You can only have 1 broadband connection on your line, hence the need to request a MAC code, which theoretically should reduce the chances of being billed twice - it certainly means it's more provable that you shouldn't be billed twice anyway.

I haven't heard of post-switch charging happening with Orange, although there are mentions of it with people moving from TalkTalk.

I think their advice is to make sure you cancel the Direct Debit - on the basis it's easier to dispute them asking you for money, than trying to claim money you've been incorrectly billed and paid.

Or make sure that the account is cancelled after you have migrated.... just because you cancel the Direct Debit doesn't mean that they won't stop adding the charges up if they haven't set your account's status to closed

Are Talk Talk any good? They have just phoned me and offered a fantastic deal. Said they do everything to changeover and I don't need a MAC code.

  • do a bit of searching on these forums about Talk Talk before signing up. the only reason they offer a good deal is because their product they supply is dreadful and customer service is non-existant. this has also been widely published on news and consumer programmes like watchdog and working lunch.

Just a word of warning. I was with Tiscali for many years with no major problems. They were then taken over by Talk Talk. The speed did slow down, but not enought to cause major concern. The main problem is they cold called me as an exisiting customer and asked if I wanted to upgrade my package to include TV. I gave a clear no. Two weeks later I received a letter from Talk Talk saying that they were pleased to confirm my new TV package! I contacted their Customer Service who were very bad. They tried to get me to phone other Talk Talk Departments. Lucky I was out of contract so I cancelled my contract. They did not even try to talk me out of it. Just beware as to what you are signing up to.

Right, well I will be giving them a miss then. Think it will have to be the BT package, just for ease.

Certainly don't like the sound of them, so will not be joining up.

After much thought have now decided to stay put with Orange paying £19.99 per month, even though I think it is a total rip off.

I have so many other issues to deal with at the moment I just can't cope with the stress of a changeover going wrong - even though in the grand scheme of things this is a very trivial issue:o

From everything I have read on here each and every provider seem to have caused people grief and none of them seem to stand out as being particularly good.

I was initially very pleased when I saw the BT Surf and Talk offer, but have been put off that by the posts about terrible customer service and Indian call centres.

Even Plusnet don't seem to be looked on as being particularly good.

Can anybody say that changing provider was a simple and straightforward process?

Thanks for all the advice though.

Paying £19.99 for any bb service is excessive, especially so for Orange. The vast majority of migrations go through without any problems at all. The ones that don't are the ones you tend to hear about on this board. Though you'll probably hear more complaints about BT and TT-and very few about 02 and Plusnet.
My change to 02 was absolutely problem-free, with less than 2 hours of downtime.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • Also, it looks like that deal you mention from BT (Talk & Surf for £15.99) excludes Line Rental?!

Adds further £11.54 to your bill.
