Do I have to accept Paypal for collection only items?

I haven't sold anything on ebay in ages and hope someone can advise.

I want to sell some items for collection only. Do I absolutely have to accept Paypal? In the past when I sold things collection only I used to say cash on collection only and for me this is the easiest option and I don't have to worry about getting done by someone claiming they never got the item. I need to know as I won't put them on ebay if this is the case. Thanks.

you don't have to accept Paypal for ANY transaction if you don't want to.

yes u do, ebay rules state u must accept it for all sales except motors. you can say cash on collection prefered within your auction i guess, but u have to give the option.

you could get them to sign something saying they have received the item, give them a copy and yourself a copy? might help just in case, but most people are genuine enough.

You are a couple of years out of date.

Paypal must be offered and accepted on all ebay auctions apart from those in the motor vehicle categories. Unfortunately that does of course mean that collection only items must now have paypal enabled and there is no 100% way to avoid this.

The only way I've seen that might work is to offer this is a postage item, quote the approporiate courier rate plus all the packaging materials etc but say something like collection is available by prior agreement , then if buyer says they want to collect you can talk them into cash, if not you can insist on charging them for a courier as per the listing.

Obviously this only works if you can actually arrange pallet delivery of some sort if buyer calls your bluff.

What planet you on.? You do if you actually wish to sell on ebay

Yes you do the only place you dont have to accept paypal is motors. The problem with paypal for collection items is you cant prove delivery so the buyer after they have the item could put a claim in for non receipt and win.

You can ask the buyer for cash but they could still pay via paypal.
  • oh, on an extra note, if you didnt want to accept paypal for selling goods you could always use a different method to ebay? gumtree or your local trade it can be pretty good. :)

That wont work for Paypal as they require online proof of delivery. It may be of use if you had to go via small claims

Sorry but no, you can't even say cash on collection is preferred, you can merely offer it as an option.

Don't bother with receipts or such nonsense unless it is a high end item and seller is prepared to take this all through the courts if scammed. If you do want the receipt on collection option make sure you are fully aware of what is proper ID, make sure you have checkable proof that will stand up in court of buyers address and proof that the person collecting is the same person named on their proof of address. Then when you lose the paypal chargeback (and you will) small claims is an option.

For new sellers the paypal on collection issue is covered here:

Not a problem surely! You get them to sign a receipt when they collect the item

Personally I would no longer sell high end goods on ebay that cannot be posted.I either sell small things that I am happy to lose, or make sure I can add postage somehow in case paypal is used.

Seriously I would read the rules which state quite clearly that online tracking to prove delivery (and with a signature available online over £150) MUST be given to win a paypal chargeback.

So HM The Queen herself could sign a bit of paper and paypal would merely laugh at you.

As a buyer would you really be happy to lose your money because a seller merely has to show a bit of paper with a squiggle on it (probably done by himself) to 'prove' you collected the item?
