comparison sites top picks are with standing charge?
Options
Just used a couple of comparison sites and both come up with EDF Online Saver v5 as the best tarriff. In fact the top 3 in my list have a standing charge.
Is Standing Charge becoming the norm in Utilities now? I personally can't see the benefit of a tarriff with Standing charge as the unit price is more than offset by the daily standing charge.
Anyone else agree/disagree?

The comparison sites give the list of suppliers cheapest first based on overall cost. Who cares how the cost is made up, as long as it is the cheapest overall cost."Now to trolling as a concept. .... No standing charge tariffs are just a marketing con. I remember having one in the late 70's, took me a few months to figure out it was a con. The difference is only usually pennies per year either way. The only people who gain by no standing charge tariffs are those who use next to no energy. I always use a standing charge tariff where possible as it is far easier to work out bills.0

No con - if you use over the tier 1 level, the price is exactly the same.
If you use less than tier 1 level, you'll save on a NSC tariff.
It can be quite common for gas users in the summer to use less than the tier 1 level, especially if they cook by electric.
You will never be better off on a SC compared to the equivalent NSC tariff."Now to trolling as a concept. .... I am on a no standing charge tariff with British Gas at the moment. The first 500kw per annum are charged at Tier 1 which equates to the first unit I use each day costing over 30p or if average along with tier 2 taken, 10p per unit.
I'm moving to a standing charge tariff with EDF of 20.39p per day and units of 7.46p, averages around 7.8p per unit.
I'm looking to save over £400 a year on the standing charge tariff.0 -

Whether you can save £400 or not has nothing to do with there being a daily standing charge. No-one argues that different tariffs from different suppliers can cost different prices and a tariff with a daily or annual standing charge can be cheaper than one with no standing charge where they are each completely separate tariffs from different suppliers.
The suggestion is that where there is a daily standing charge version and a two-tier no daily standing charge version of the same tariff then the two-tier tariff is usually the more sensible option as there is a chance you may save some money over summer or whenever your useage dips.
And I hope you have an Economy 7 meter 'cause otherwise your electricity is very expensive.0 -
No con - if you use over the tier 1 level, the price is exactly the same. But it is marketed as cheaper due to no standing charge.

It can be quite common for gas users in the summer to use less than the tier 1 level, especially if they cook by electric. But many use over the tier 1. I do as my water is gas heated and works out cheaper than using the immersion.

I prefer to use a SC tariff as I can see my costs without working out the different rates0 -

NSC is only cheaper if you use less than the tier 1 level of units.

However, if you do use less, (and yes I heat hot water by gas, I don't even have an immersion), you can gain by being on a NSC tariffMy SC tariff is marginally cheaper than the NSC equivalentI prefer to use a SC tariff as I can see my costs without working out the different rates
Seeing as you admit to such difficulty, that may well address the point you previously tried to make about SC being cheaper"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Tier 1 = 500 units at 24.041 p per kwh
500 units at 24.041 p per kwh = £120.20 per annum
£120.20 per annum = 33p per day
500 units = 1.36 units per day = 32.7p per day
is there something wrong with arithmetic?0
