With the upcoming draw for the World Cup and people looking to finalise their travel arrangements accordingly I thought it would be worthwhile setting up a thread for people to discuss what they are doing and any money saving they have achieved (albeit highly unlikely with the inflated prices)

Hi Steve. I'm going over for the final. Arrive on the 1st July and Leave on 13th.
I have booked my flights, flying from Edinburgh via Amsterdam, then onto Nairobi and from there to Joburg. I looked at flights a wekk before England qualified and could have booked for £530 a week later it cost me £630. Flights should definitely be booked ASAP.
I have researched Accomodation and it's best to stay away from the official "Match" accomodation their prices are way higher than you can get by looking around on the Web.

I am looking to go over probably for either the last 16 to quarters or the quarters to the Semi's, with fingers crossed England make it to at least the quarters.

I am going to try and book my flights this week, just its a bit of a gamble before the draw is made. I am still trying to convince my girlfriend that it could be our summer holiday next year lol

With regards to accomodation I was hoping to stay in decent areas i.e. for safety reasons but again Im not keen to pay over the odds in some of the "official" hotels.

LOL Sadly Scotland will never be at another World Cup, so I go to Finals when possible for the experience. Had some great times. Been to the last 2 Euro Finals and a few Champs League ones. This is my first World Cup Final. It's about the holiday with the Final as a bonus. Expensive one this though, the tickets for the final were £550 each!

The draw is on Friday Steve so you will know more then. RE Hotels. SA strangely does not do Hotels in a big way. Most of the accomodation is Guest Houses. I have done a lot of research and am on a few forums where I get good advice. If I can help let me know.
England could go a long way in this, if they get the luck.

anyone got any idea about good packages deals for the 2010 world cup?
  • If you are fussy about accommodation I would seriously think about booking something now, because there simply isn't anywhere near enough to support the amount of ppl travelling to SA.

I have tickets for some games like Spain, Germany Italy Holland, but looking to swap for enlgand.

The best money saving possibilities I think, are to LODGE with people who live there, any contacts wd be helpful if anyone has any family/friends there?

It's also a nice little earner for the residents there who will benefit from the wc financially so everyone's a winner. Hotels are non existant almost and lodges for safaris etc are not gonna be much use for football fans goin to matches, and they have very limited availability.

So if anyone has contacts there who wanna make a few quid letting a room out to some england fans you could pm ppl email addresses etc

    thanks!! :T
  • I am hoping on going from the 1st to 12th July preferbly from london (although i realise that i should be prepared to fly from anywhere in the UK) Number of stops are irrelevant as long as i can get a decent deal.

    Any recommendations?

    Hi
I have in laws living in Johanesburg suburbs (Benoni) and they are considering letting their house during the cup and asked me to do some research.
However there are couple of things to consider - one of them is transport.Public transport in SA is non existent.Well , it does exist but ask any South African in London if they ever dared to used it, I doubt you would be succesfull.
So unless you live next to the stadium, you would need to either rent a car, make arrangements with the host for drop/picking you up or using private taxis ( I stil need to ask them if this kind of taxis exists)
SA infrastructure is like USA - if you don't have a car, you are screwed. The difference is that if you are left at night without car in USA , worst case scenario you will have a rough night. In SA, you will probably be robbed in the best case, worst- killed for a mobile or couple of coins.
Anyway , if anyone interested we can try to work things out.I have quite a few SA friends from Joburg in London and their families back in SA may be interested too.
