Help with 5 Year Old Homework.

Hi wonder if anyone can help me on this, sons homework is really starting to stress me out god knows how he feels so was wondering if anyone had any ides on how to best complete this weeks?!
On friday he came home with a bean seed and piece of kitchen roll with instructions on how to grow it. He has to chart its progress over 2 weeks.
Problem is even though we have followed the instructions exactly it hasnt done a thing and he has to give it in on Tuesday!! I have tried to get more seeds but nowhere seems to have them, ordered them on line on the monday till not received them, planted some sunflower ones (but they take a bit longer), not sure what to do now.
I wrote a note to his teacher as I work 8-6 so never get to see her and she hasnt responded.
Question is should we just a) write that nothing happened b) explain that we got a duff bean and write what should of happened had it worked though son is finding this pretty hard to follow as all he cares about is his lack of bean plant.
Son is very upset as he says everyone elses is growing not sure what to do he really likes to put a lot of effort into his homework- sometimes I think this homework is set for me!!!
Other thing is he got it on the 13th and has to give it in on 24th so thats not 2 weeks anyway?!
Any ideas appreciated

If it didn't grow, it didn't grow. Don't worry about it. Your son can still explain what he did, draw his picture of it/whatever is required and hopefully laugh about it in class when it comes to swapping stories. He can always grow something else another time and take it in to show his friends and teacher.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

It'll won't be any consolation to your Son but the teacher will probably use his as an example to show that they aren't all guaranteed to grow.0

Yeah thats kind of my attitude, but a lot of emphasise is put on making effort with homework and this one has gone a bit downhill obviously through no fault of his own- hes quite a sensitive little thing though.
Just thought maybe he should write what should happen as otherwise his box for each day of the week is going to have an identical picture of a bean... which he will find pretty boring to draw and write 14 times quite apart from anything else.
I know its not the end of the world i just wondered if anyone had any ideas I've seen some very creative ideas from other mums/teachers etc.0 -
You should put what really happened, not what should have.
I would also then find some info online that explains why it might not have grown dfor him to take in, he can then tell the class what can go wrong with growing beans and he will get closure, rather than him thinking it's his fault.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Thanks thats a good idea, I'll have a look and see what I can find.0

He could draw a picture of him eating it instead!May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

Bless you!
You know what I'd do? Get down to B&Q (or the like) tonight and buy a small packet of cress seeds and grow them on some damp kitchen roll or some soil. By Tuesday something should have happened! And cress is quite hardy.
Then let him take both the bean and the cress in and say that the bean was being lazy so we grew some busy cress instead."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
Hi there. I'm just nipping in from the Greenfingered Board.
That's the trouble with bean seeds. Not all of them germinate. If you get a duff seed then no matter what you do, no matter how closely you follow the instructions, it's just not going to happen - especially at this time of year.
It's a great pity that your little one wasn't given at least two seeds. I sow mung beans, sprouting beans etc. and I can assure that I'm lucky if three quarters of them actually take. And I'm an experienced gardener!
So don't beat yourself up. Tell your little boy that the seed was bad and probably dead before he was given it. Suggest that he draws a lovely picture of a sick seed (he can be the doctor!) for his homework. He can even do a chart - although it won't be very interesting (Day One: looks OK, Day Two: nothing, Day Three: sick, Day Four: sick, Day Five: Dead, Day Six: Still Dead). :rotfl:
Chin up.:beer:0 -
Oh my goodness this brings back memories, our teacher used to give us two beans and we put one either side of the jar. Bit on the tight side giving only one bean, also we grew them in the classroom.
I agree with Kay Peel, still do the chart.0 -
I'm glad it's not just me who struggles with homework!
The other day I had to send a note in saying I didn't understand how to do 9 y.o. DS's maths homework - and I've got a degree!
Other DS also got lines for not doing an assignment - we had spend hours doing one that's not due till December. :rolleyes:0
