Problems with Virgin

The service I've been getting from Virgin over the past few weeks has been dire, and judging by the comments from others on Virgin's web site, I'm by no means alone.

So I'm finally thinking of giving up on Virgin. Only problem is, as far as I'm aware, it would mean losing my existing e-mail addresses which I'm reluctant to do, at least not until I've made alternative arrangements.

All of which has led me to wondering whether it would be possible to add a second Broadband provider, which I could then use as an alternative to the flakey Virgin service. The idea would be to continue with Virgin until I'd sorted out the e-mail.

May seem a daft idea / question, and it would obviously involve extra expense, but is there any technical obstacle to this?

Personally I would never rely on an ISP's email address. They seem to prevent some people from leaving for better deals. Why not get a googlemail/hotmail/yahoo account? Then your email address would never tie you down again.

You should never use your ISPs email service - you will be in exactly the same position next time you want or need to change ISP!

Sign up for an email address, with Gmail for example, and when you are happy everyone using it, move ISP.

    Cheaper too.
  • Virgin are shocking and I've finally pulled the plug. Managed to get a free BT connection this morning and now looking for a new supplier. I never use the ISP email addresses though in case this very thing happens.

If you enable forwarding on your email account, some still forward even when the account has been cancelled, I still receive emails to an old BT address when I cancelled the account years ago.
