Boiler has broke - advice please??

My combi boiler of 10 years has stopped producing hot water & heating. The boiler ignites but a few seconds later cuts off. Reading the manual it points to a circuit board problem. Could Someone give me an idea very roughly what I can expect to pay for a circuit board to be replaced, so I dont get ripped off?

Cheers

  • Depends what boiler as the boards are different prices.
I would get a gas enginner to look at it first as it may not be the board. You could try bg fixed price repair.
  • I think BG charge £150 for a fixed price repair.

  • Depends where you live. Average fixed price from them is £168.

They may refuse to repair it. When my 10yr old combi broke down I was advised that is was not worth repairing as 10 years is about the expected life span of a combi boiler (so much for them supposedly being cheaper to run - not once you've factored in the cost of replacement every 10 years or so)

Have you checked whether you'd be entitled to a warm front grant for replacing the boiler (I had mine replaced free under the scheme, although unfortunately this was partly offset by the cost of repairing the damage they did to the house, but that's another story....)

I paid £200 for a new circuit board in May this year. That includes having it fitted. I was particularly gutted because if it had gone a month earlier, it would have been covered under a Guarantee.

Do bear in mind though that if you are in receipt of various type of benefits, regardless of whether you are the owner occupier or tenant, you can get it fixed for free or even replaced if need be, under the Warmfront Grant! Tel 0800 316 6011
  • I think you need a gas engineer as it's proberly not even the board.
I would use a mulimeter and check the the flame sensing device first before saying it was the board. Does the flame burn for about 5 seconds then go out?
