Cambridge Water/Anglia Water soLow rates

Dear All,

I would be interested in hearing from other CW/AW SoLow users. I've finally received a bill after 6 months of waiting for a reading and bill - my first water bill ever. I was shocked to find that standing charges make-up over half if not more of the bill, especially Anglia Water Sewage part of the bill. I've only used 27 m3 in over 6 months which would qualify me for SoLow - with no standing charges. I'm consider moving to this new rate, but I'm unsure about two issues:

1.The SoLow with surface water draining charge is £2.3860 (£1 more than the standard rate) and the SoLow with No surface water drainage £1.8823. I live in 2nd floor new build flat (no garden) and unsure how the surface drainage works and so which one applies to me - sorry I'm rather dumb about this one!

2. If it is the former @ £2.3860 - will I really save anything if the rate is double the standard rate?

I'm not happy about the standing charges, nor at the prospect of having to pay a higher rate when I'm using very little water.

Any constructive advice welcomed.

You need to check if you have a soakaway and no rainwater goes into the drains, this includes rain from your patio for example, if you dont have any rainwater entering the drains then you can go on the no surface drainage tarriff and will need to apply to AW, they sometimes send someone around to check once you have applied

From your post i take it you are supplied by 2 companys AW and CW one for water and one for sewage ?

Not sure if you can go on So Low if supplied by 2 companys i would ring and check

Thanks. I emailed AW about the Sewerage standing charges and the advice was to contact CW about the SoLow rate - I think it applies only to AW rather than both, but will check.

What is a 'soakaway?'. My flat is on the 2nd floor and the balancy is only 17 cm wide - i.e. only room for plants. I'll emailed the builders to find out what the set up is...

    Thanks again :T

A soakaway is where the rainwater seeps into the ground rather than in the sewer

  • Further to your posting, I am responding on behalf of Cambridge Water.

If you are a Cambridge Water customer, you will receive fresh water services from Cambridge Water, and sewerage services from Anglian Water.

Although SOLOW is an Anglian Water tariff, we are responsible for issuing your joint water and sewerage bill.

The way the SOLOW tariff saves you money is by increasing the unit charge for sewerage but not charging you a standing charge.

To benefit from the tariff you need to use less than 75 cubic metres of water over a year, or 37 cubic metres over a six month period. The water charges are left unaffected.

If you were to apply to Cambridge Water within a month from the bill date, and (based on the information you have supplied) we believe you are eligible for the SOLOW tariff, we will be able to back-date the application for the SOLOW tariff onto your last bill. Please call us on 01223 70 60 50 to discuss.

With regards to the Surface Water drainage discount, you can receive this discount if the surface water, such as rain or melted snow that drains from the roof of your premises or other impenetrable areas such as concrete or asphalt driveways, runs into soakaways around your property.

I would recommend that you contact Cambridge Water direct on 01223 70 60 50 and we will be able to check whether you are already in receipt of this discount and if you are not we will be able to advise you of how to check if you have soakaways installed or if the water runs in the main sewerage system.

I hope this is a helpful response to your query.
