Modern versions of any form of heater, give out exactly the same heat, for the same running costs, as any other heater of any age. - including Grandmother's old 1/2/3 bar fire.
There are so many adverts that give the impression that their heater is endowed with some special qualities that enable heat to be produced cheaply. They are all a con, a fraud!!!0 -
I am confused Cardew!
I bought a 1.2kwh halogen heater and on the side of the box, it says can cost as little as 3p per hour to run, how do they arrive at this figure as my tariff on economy 7 is 16p per kwh at peak time?Stopped smoking Jan 2007 after 23 years!Cigarettes NOT smoked = 240,945Smoke free days = 11 Years :TCash saved so far = £125,45,110 -

If the heater has 3 differerent heat settings then 1 bar on coupled with the cheapest tarif available any where would be the "as little as" figure

Just about the cheapest tariff around will buy you 'leccy for about 8.5p/KWh. Each "bar" on those cheapie Halogen heaters are 400Watts, so...
8.5p/1000 = 0.000085 * 400 = £0.034 per hour to run one bar of your Halogen heater.
Of course it "can cost as little as 3p per hour" if you had a cheaper tariff or used it overnight on economy 7!
The point Cardew makes though, is that all electric heaters are 100% efficient. 1KW/h in, 1KW/h out.0 -

I think most of these 1200W(1.2kW) halogen heaters have 3 elements, each 400W.
So if you have one 400W element and get your electricity for 7.5p/kWh then it will indeed cost 3p an hour. (I pay 7.113p/kWh on an old fixed tariff)
I have seen 100w heaters, so they can say 'less than a penny an hour'.
The important point is that you don't get 'owt for nowt'. - all electrical heaters of the same power give out the same heat, and thus cost the same to run.0 -
