Moved into new Flat, Water Question

Hi There,

We have just moved into our new flat. Its not on a water meter so is it just a case of phoning up Seven Trent to let them know. I guest you cannot move suppliers like you can for gas etc.

Is there any payment options with seven trent that makes it easy for us to pay weekley

Chris

If you don't have a meter your charges will be based on the Rateable Value(RV)

Severn Trent will be able to tell you exactly how much your charges will be for 2009/10. The bill untill April 2010 is due immediately.

You can see if this is likely to be more expensive than the average cost of water charges when metered. The average consumption is 60 cubic meters per person per year. Generally around £300pa for a couple.

If you think that a meter will be cheaper you can apply to have one fitted for free. If it is not possible to fit one, you can elect for an assessed charge.

Severn Trent have a scheme where you can pay by monthly Direct Debit.

Cardew is right so the only thing I can add is that STW does have a weekly or fortnightly payment scheme as well.

One option is with a watercard through paypoint and the other is a booklet that means you can set up a standing order with your bank if you wanted to.
Direct Debit is monthly but the other 2 options can be weekly is requested.

  • I will give them a Call on Monday to let them know. I think Weekley is better for me as we pay the Gas and Electric the same way by card at the postoffice. Then i can keep track on things myself.

I know its hard to work out what our monthly amount will be but can anyone tell us how much you think we will have to pay each month for Water, Sewage Drains etc. We ara a couple with a bath but no shower and use the washing machine a few times a week.

As you don't have a meter it doesn't matter if you each take 6 baths per day as the amount of water you use is not measured.;)

Only Severn Trent can work out your water charges as it depends on several factors that none of us know.

Most important is the Rateable Value of your flat.

Then there is the zone of Severn Trent's area in which you live.

Thirdly if you have to pay for Surface water drainage.

If it is more than £300 a year, you certainly want to consider getting a meter.
  • Contacted Seven Trent,

Worked out for the rest of the year until March 2010 is around £105.01 for remaining amount which will be around £6.50 a week on the payment plan for around 16 Weeks up until start of March.

For the area where we are the bill for year 2009 to 2010 was £255 for the whole 12 months but they cannot give us a figure for next year yet.

Water meter would have worked out a little more as well

  • My dad seems to think that the above figure is expensive for this area. Is there anyway to find out

£255 for 12 months on the RV system is below average.

You need to find out the RV of the property and the charging zone.

However what is the good of finding out if it is high or low? There is nothing you can do about the situation.
  • Cheers for the advice. I did call them back but they said that due to the other person that lived in this flat we would have to wait 5 days for the bill to get to us (I think the other owner must have left some overdue payments with them)

I will update on here when i get the actaul figure

  • Just an update,

Got our paper bill today from Seven Trent Water

Bill from Sept 28th 2009 to 31 March 2010 is £128.63 and is to be paid at £7.15 per week

They said the figure for the flat from April 2009 to 2010 would have been £250.30 for the whoel year and

My Flat Rateable Value which is based from 1989 is £127.00 per Month and we are on Band A Council Tax

I know that i cannot change or question this figure but my dad lives nearby in a 2 Bed House that has 2 Adults using the house same as us and is Council Tax Band A and same supplier which is Seven Trent and his Rateable Value is only £72.00 per month with his yearly water bill from April 2009 to 2010 is £152.00 which makes ours about 60% higher for the same area, same council tax band and his house is woth more than our council flat. Seems wrong to me. I would have thought the house would be more expensive back in 1989 than our council flat.

Although they say it was the RV in 1989, that was when the RV system stopped. Most valuations took place in 1973!!

Rateable Value(RV) is nothing to do with the value of the property and particularly the Council Tax Band.

I can show you mansions in several acres that are Band H (in Severn Trent area) and worth £millions with a RV lower than your Dad's house.

The RV was based on the notional rent the property would command in the period from 1973 to 1989. That rent would depend on area, state of modernisation(did it have Central heating, modern kitchen bathroom etc) Garage, on bus route, schools etc etc.

So the Band H mansion could have been dilapidated and unmodernised in 1973 and nobody would want to rent an unheated place with large grounds to upkeep etc. However a modern(in 1973) semi in a nice area might have an RV of £250.

Of course the mansion could now be completely modernised.
