Want to get more fish

I've just moved my goldfish to a bigger tank, its a bio-orb one.
And now he looks lonely, so me and OH are thinking of buying more fish.
Well in my Bio-orb booklet it says not to mix other kinds of fish with goldfish and they are boisterous and only to put 2-4 goldfish in the tank.
Upon mentioning this to a friend she told me she has 11 fish in a smaller tank and they are all different kinds of fish, and they are fine so i should be.
So now im confused.
My goldfish is 2yrs old and about 6/7cm long. And very calm and not boisterous at all

You can't mix tropical and cold water fish in the same tank which I think is what you're asking/suggesting?!
If the tank is only 30 litres then it's not even big enough for a SINGLE goldfish. They need approx 10 gallons per goldfish to avoid stress/illness.
PS Depending on the breed of your goldfish, you may already have stunted his growth if he's only 6/7cm at 2 years old! You say he was in a smaller tank than the Biorb before?!“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Ok, its 30 galleons not litres lol. Sorry im at work so typing inbetween calls.
He was really tiny when i got him and then all of a sudden grew to this size over the past few months, he was in a 15galleon tank before which was big for him and i've got him a new tank cause of his growth spurt.
Oh and no we're not mixing cold and tropical fish
Sorry reading back my post does not make sense lol. What ig et for fast typing. x0 -
As I understand it is one inch of fish to one gallon of water - goldfish needing the most space
So you are indeed limited to one goldfish ( if you have coldwater fish)
However you can add other fish like danios to that These are very small shoal fish but I wouldnt add more then 5 or 6 and make sure weekly water changes are done0 -

Are you sure about that? The Biorb 30L is a 30 litre or 8 gallon bowl. They don't even make a 30 gallon one as far as I'm aware
What were the dimensions of the tank he was in before?“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
You are right Chameleon, they do not make biorbs that big! in any case a biorb is a completely unsuitable shape for goldfish.I do think a lot of it is what looks nice for the owner and not what is suitable for the poor fish.A large plain oblong tank is far preferable. You can still make them look nice with the landscaping and plants.
Evans angel, please take time out to read the advice on this site,it will tell you all you need to know.

Glad you mentioned the unsuitable shape, which is why goldfish bowls were deemed to be entirely unsuitable! Fish need a large surface area to allow sufficient oxygen to dissolve in the water so they can breathe!
The other reason you shouldn't overcrowd the tank is because the waste products pollute the water (ammonia, nitrates) thus reducing the oxygen levels and will actually 'burn' the gills causing respiratory damage.
The only other small coldwater fish that could live alongside goldfish are White Cloud Minnows, but again I wouldn't advise adding any more fish to a tank of that size.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
Biorbs are not suited to goldfish at all and it is correct that each goldfish needs a minimum of 10 gallons of water, preferably in a traditional recatangular shaped tank. There is not enough surface area in a bowl type tank like a biorb and they are definiely not big enough!!!!. Goldfish also need excellent filtration and a biorb filter isn't up to the job at all. If he really has to stay in the biorb for now then please do not buy any other fish to go in there and you will need to do a 20% ish water change at least every other day with temperature matched and dechlorinated water.
Is the biorb cycled?
Also I'd just like to point out that danios are tropical fish so would not be suitable to share a tank with a goldsfish!0 -
Im sorry but I have 6 zebra danios in my tank alongside my goldfish and they have been there a year and are thriving

Whilst it's true that there are 'tropical' fish that manage very well in cooler water temps, it really isn't advisable to keep them in the same tank as goldfish for reasons mentioned earlier - goldfish can be aggressive, plus they excrete large amounts of waste which is toxic to other smaller fish.
Only in extremely optimal conditions would this work i.e. very large tank 150-200 gallons, with frequent water changes and regular monitoring/testing of water chemistry. Certainly not something a novice fish keeper should undertake.“You can please some of the people some of the time, all of the people some of the time, some of the people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.”0 -
But they do live quite well alongside
The first few days of intoducing them there was a bit of argy bargy but it soon settled
We water change weekly and we water test weekly as well
Its not difficult, its a lot easier to maintain then the tropical s we used to have many moons ago. So far in the year we have had this tank - not one death, not one illness. The coldwater fish do seem to be more hardier and can take pretty vast variants of temperature0
