You could have been a lot more subtle and played along with him. Pretend you have shipped the item and act surprised when it hasn't turned up. Then get irate when the PO is found to be a forgery :)

Yes, definitely. I thought everybody had heard of Nigerian scams now.
    Can I help?

The above address confirms that the potential [STRIKE]buyer[/STRIKE] scammer is from Nigeria and Nigerians are well known for their scams. The poor spelling, grammar and English should also make alarm bells ring.

Has anyone seen "149eater" website which gives loads of stories on nigerian scammers and how to scam them back

It's good when these idiots get whats coming to them and some people keep the scammers going for weeks thinking that they are getting one over on you but infact its the other way round so you can get your own back on the scammer

I feel sorry for thr poor honest Nigerian's who must think where alll a bunch of ungrateful b******s for telling them where to go.:D
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Liz,

You should post a hand grenade to the shipping address!!

I read somewhere that the second highest source of income for Nigeria as a whole were these 419 scams, without them the economy would collapse which is why there seems a reluctance in some areas to clamps down as hard as they might.

Just put the word Nigeria and scam in a google search and the hits run to hundreds of pages.

To answer the original question, I don't think the OP was harsh at all. Virtually everyone knows about the 419 scam (except the occasional newbie as outlined above) and it is worth sending a strong message to the scammers that their days are numbered. The more we talk about it the more newbies will be warned and maybe the scammers will have to give up. Don't feel sorry for your scammer, feel sorry for the next naive person that sends their phone to Nigeria and never sees it or the money again.
