My Washington Holiday Diary

Day 1 – Sunday 30th August
Walked from hotel to Iwo Jima Memorial and was immediately struck by the majesty of it, this was the first picture I took on my trip, it was at 6am and only a couple of joggers and a dog walker in the park and there was a constant chirping of crickets, I took loads more photo’s at this site at different times of day but this first sighting will stay with me the longest I think.

I then continued on to the Lincoln Memorial.

This whole area is laid out with statues and monuments and I went round most of them through the course of the day.
Korean War Memorial.

Franklin D. Roosevelt Memorial.

WWII Memorial.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Statue.
(I have to be honest and say that the wall of names did nothing for me)

The Washington Monument dominates the whole area and crops up in a lot of my photo’s, I make no apology for this.

Day 2
First stop was Capitol Building with the Grant monument out in front to the west.

The east face of the Capitol

The Supreme Court

Smithsonian Castle (north side)

Day 3
Arlington Cemetery is a very humbling place, I was very impressed the way the Americans treat their servicemen in death.
Whilst walking round and purely by chance I saw a number of headstones with my surname on and on visiting the information centre discovered that there are 10 stones with my surname though none as yet with my full name.

John F. Kennedy’s plot
Edward Kennedy’s plot nearby

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Day 4
This was a day in museums and not many pictures taken although the Navy Memorial was impressive in a simplistic way with just a lone life-size sailor and kit bag.
The Holocaust Museum was very interesting and had a great effect on a group of teenage students some of them were streaked with tears at some of the images. This museum requires a lot of reading and is a very powerful place.
The Bureau of Printing & Engraving tour was short but good to see all that money chasing round the printing machines, no pictures allowed except this one.
Day 5
Took a ‘DUCK’ tour, nothing special really and the trip on the water was a bit dull.
Went to the American History Museum and then on to the Natural History Museum, was disappointed that the butterfly house charged for entry.

Day 6
American Indian Museum was not to my taste so quickly moved next door to the Air & Space Museum which I went round twice to make sure that I missed nothing (but probably did anyway).

Went to a baseball game in the evening, had a good chat with the people round me and a good view of the home team getting stuffed.
Day 7
Camera had the day off while I went to 6 Flags, I am really getting too old for these thrill rides, I was actually screaming for real this time around, got a good soaking on the 2 watersplash rides but dried quickly in the hot sunny weather.
Day 8
White House (north)
And south

Jefferson Memorial
Botanic Gardens was great, I took dozens of pictures and got hooked on Orchids, also stole a couple of ideas for my own garden.

Last day
Had a walk round Theodore Roosevelt Island, it is a wild and natural setting and the monument sits well within it.

Was lucky enough to visit Washington a few years ago, it's an interesting city and your photo's brought back some great memories.
I'm going back next year and taking my mum for her first visit, I will have to show her this post to wet her appetite.0 -

DC is on our 'to do' list - just waiting until DD is a bit older so she is better able to appreciate the meaning/significance of things like the memorials - maybe 3 or 4 years time.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07
