I've been sent details of a proposed new price protection deal from Eon called Price Protection R3 which isn't appearing on any of the switching websites so I can find out how it compares with other deals. Does anyone know anything about it - it's supposed to protect until May 2011 with no cancellation fees?

I to have had details on a new price cap deal from eon called R2, and is effective untill April 2011 its to take over from my present price Protection plan which expires in October. details with the letter are not enough for me to deceide if its any good and there is nothing on the web site at all. There is a number to phone, but i just can't be bothered to talk with some sales person on the other end. Eon have been ok, although i find there "manage your own account online " a bit of a joke, its really so annoying when just after you send in any meter readings a man turns up to read your meters...its like they do not trust you. I feel a change of supplier may be in order but if anyone can shed some light on the Eon Price Protection R2 i would love to hear your views.0 -
There are 3 new tariffs to replace existing price protection tariffs that expire in October.
Which one you are offered is dependent on your circumstances.
The tariffs aren't on comparison sites as it is only price protection customers who are expring in october who can have the tariff.0 -

Sorry Rosemary, but you will have to do a manual comparison to check the new Price Protection R3 tariff against other products/suppliers.
As mrmichaelf says, these tariffs are only being offered to customers currently on the protected products ending on 1 October 2009. As they are not generally available they do not appear on either the switching sites or our own website.
Like most of our price protection/capped tariffs, R3 carries a premium above our standard rates. Therefore, it is not the cheapest product available.
Even though R3 is not on the switching sites I would still pop your usage on and see what is available. It may be a protected product is not for you any more.
Unless we hear from you, though, your account will automatically go on to R3. However, you can switch at any time without having to pay a cancellation fee.
Please be aware, we don't give discount on final bills when changing supplier. Therefore, if you decide to switch to another provider it would be best to time the move to lessen the impact of this.
I can also confirm the new R3 tariff guarantees not to increase prices until 1 May 2011.
Hope this helps but give me a shout if you need any more details.

Hi denwyn
The comments I posted above in response to Rosemary_Horton are also generally applicable to the R2 tariff.
The only real difference is R2 prices are guaranteed not to rise until 1 April 2011.
I'm really sorry you're disappointed with our online management service. We always encourage customers to provide meter readings online but this does not mean we will not read your meter.
We have a duty of care to read all meters on a regular basis. This is part of the industry wide Codes of Practice which we subscribe to. It is also to make sure the meter is not faulty and is safe.
In no way does it mean we don't trust your readings. In fact, the more readings we receive the more accurate your bills are likely to be.
As part of online management we send out emails asking for a meter reading when a bill is due. However, where we already have a reading this email will not be sent and you do not need to enter a reading if you don't wish to.
Hope this clarifies our policy but give me a shout if you need more info. Always happy to help.

Do you know if in the future the new deals will be listed on the price comparison sites at all, I mean after they start? I'm not really interested in switching right at the moment as personally I find Eon refreshingly easy to deal with (after British Gas, who I'd rather gas myself to death than deal with again) so I'd prefer to wait and see how things play out.
Of course if the direct debits started jumping up I'd consider shopping around and wondered whether they would show on the comparison sites later in the year.
Another question is if I manage to find my login details to Eons site, would the R3 product be available to view against others that I could change onto?
Cheers0 -
Hi Blondetotty
The new R1, R2 and R3 tariffs will not be available to switch to on the comparison sites. However, they may be available to compare with.
To be honest, not sure how it will work as the switching sites present the info we give them in different ways.
Just come off the phone with one particular site and, although these tariffs are not on their listings at the moment, plans are afoot to make the info available for comparison purposes. I suspect this will apply to most, if not all, the other sites as well.
These products are restricted to customers already on protected tariffs ending on 1 October 2009. Therefore, they will not be available through the general switching tool.
Your particular prices will be listed, though, when you go on to your online account and select Switch Now.
Hope this gives a little clarification. Give me a shout if you need more details. Always happy to help.

Thanks Malc
I received the letter indicating that I would be transferred to R3 at the end of my current deal but just wanted to check that I could see if I could shift to another 'internal Eon' tariff rather than looking elsewhere and also wondered for interests sake if the R1-3 products would be available strictly for comparison purposes on switching sites. Thanks for answering the questions.
Can I just ask one other question, if energy prices fall at any point, will the R3 prices reduce or are they fixed for the term of the deal? I understand they won't be increased but wondered what would happen if wholesale prices fall?
Thanks again0 -

Hi Blondetotty
Price Protection tariffs R1 to R3 cap rather than fix prices. Therefore, if our standard prices fall so will these.
Hope this answers your question but let me know if you need any more info.

Hi Malc
Can I pick your brains on a couple of things:
I too have been offered the R2 deal. I am pondering on whether to accept this or to opt for the FixOnline 3 deal that is being offered. There is a slight difference in the pence per kWhs with the FixOnline 3 being cheaper, but this offer is only fixed until 1 Dec 2010. Am I correct in that these pence per kWh is FIXED and not capped, therefore the unit prices never change, whereby the R2 deal is CAPPED and so if prices did fall then so would the R2 unit rate?
Also, nothing is mentioned about me still receiving the Tesco Clubcard points on either of these deals. Would I still get them?
Thanks in advance,
Gill.0 -

Hi Gill
Spot on. Fixonline 3 fixes prices so they will not move up or down during the term of the contract no matter what the market does.
The R2 tariff, though, is a capped product. Therefore, although prices will not go above the agreed price during the term of the contract, they will come down if prices fall below our standard prices when the tariff was taken out.
Also happy to confirm, Tesco Clubcard points are awarded on both products.
