AOL Debt Collecting. Advice Please!

I started a theard a few weeks ago in regards to AOL demanding money.

Basically after transferring my service, a month later I called AOL to query why payment was still being taken. I cancelled my account in this call.

AOL state I never called them after requesting a MAC code to cancel the account. Money owed was for service I thought I had cancelled. This was a rolling contract by the way.

I have written twice to them, second time I sent them a copy of my phone bill records which clearly shows my call to member services.

AOL have started debt collection procedure, they are looking to recover £65. This was more then the original amount (£44.97) AOL stated I owed!
I am still awaiting a response from AOL, letter was sent on 11th August.
Can someone advice on my next move and on how to deal with the debt collection agency?

  • Hi

I kept getting phone calls from AOL. I wouldn't give them my security details so they wouldn't speak to me (all in previous thread). I wrote a letter of complaint and it turns out that AOL did not close my account after I received my MAC code and switched provider as they should have.

As per the reply from the complaints team it would appear that as soon as you switch provider your account should be closed.

I would write to the complaints team telling them that you switched provider and that they knew your account was closed and ask them why further charges were applied.

    It can't hurt.

  • Hi
I have found AOL customer services to be a complete nightmare. I recently had to contact them 6 times to get them to stop the add-on subscription to MacAfee. I called twice and sent 4 emails that were not actioned even though I actually received an email confirming the cancellation. They then took two payments from my debit card against my express written instructions. When I queried this, I was told that this was because I was receiving the service. I pointed out that I had repeatedly asked for it to be cancelled so that was their problem!!

In the end, I contacted my bank and told them AOL were taking unauthorised payments. Astonishingly, the bank refunded them to my account (I nearly fell off my chair!) and must have contacted AOL because it has now been resolved.

Perhaps you could go to Citizen's Advice and ask them to write to AOL / the Debt Collectors on your behalf? They seem to respond to "officialdom" rather more than they do their customers.

    I hope this helps.
mmmm, still seeking something witty to be my auto-signature . . . so this will have to suffice for now ;)
  • Just want to point you to my thread and how I dealt with AOL and a similar problem. Nightmare is not too strong a word either. I would rather do without broadband than ever go back to AOL.

Am happily now with O2, they know how to treat their customers :T
