What makes Shephards Pie different to....

Options
......Mince & Tatties?

I said I'd make Shepards Pie for dinner tonight  but I must be missing something????

So far I've cooked the mince and I'm boiling the tatties just now, but it's just mince and tatties set out with one on top of the other instead of side by side.

Very >

I guess it's just the finished, nicely browned, end product. Of course you could make it cumberland pie by adding cheese on top or make it with beef and it would be cottage pie! :)

Lol.....I've just very finely grated some cheese in the hope it would make it look and taste wildly different and I could pretend I'd done something other than mince and tatties. :rotfl:

I like to add a tin of tomatoes, peas, mushrooms and onions to my mince and some gravy.

Top with mash and grated strong cheese..... Making my mouth water already!
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice

It depends how posh the people you're feeding are!

It reminds me of a friends Dad (when I was a kid) who refused to eat quiche, but was quite happy to wolf down a portion of egg & bacon tart!

My understanding is that shepherds pie is just mince & tatties done together in the same dish, rather than just served on the plate separately!

Shepherds pie is LAMB mince (DS#1 says with "real shepherds"!)
anything else is Cumberland / Cottage Pie.
theres a recipe on the OS board somewhere I expect.

In that case it aint Shepards pie I'm making. :D

I've used pork mince. Does that make it new and inventive? :rotfl:

I think I've got it sussed........I've used individual dishes so they'll be conned into thinking they're getting something different. ;) They are in the oven right now, browning nicely. :D

    Thanks everyone.

    Ooooo
    Pig-herd pie?
    Pig farmer pie?
    Porky pie?
or you could go the whole hog (groan) & call it Jimmy's farm pie. Then they'll think they're in for a rare old treat! :D

We used to make Poultry farmers pie - yes Turkey mince.

I was just thinking the other day that I really don't like Cottage pie, but I love mince and tatties ( mince with stock cube carrot, onion maybe mushrooms). They are virtually identical, but they just don't taste the same!

Shepherds pie is indeed made with lamb mince.

Unless you live in my house. Then shephards pie is made with beef mince. And that was the way my mother made it. Mainly because my dad does not like lamb thinks it full of grease.

I had no idea about the differnce until it I started to shop for myself.
