What's this about?[/title]
Eidos software is offering football management sim fans the chance to pre-order a download of Championship Manager 2010 PC edition for as little as £2.51 all-in, as part of a 'Pay what you want' promotion. The minimum you can actually pay for it is £2.51, as there's a 'transaction fee', but since the RRP's £29.99 it's a bargain even if you pay more than the requisite penny on top.
The pre-order offer lasts until midnight 10 September, and you'll be able to download from 11 September, the game's official release date. The deal's download-only, and if you've a slow connection it's worth bearing in mind it's likely to be a pretty big file. It's also worth noting you can only officially buy it for yourself, as the licence agreement is non-transferable.
UPDATE 19 AUG 09. The Champion site is struggling with processing payments at the moment. As the offer's on until 10 September come back and try again later.

How to get it.
[/title]
Just go through the link below to the official ChampMan online store, and click the 'buy now' button. If you don't have an account you'll need to register by filling in the short form on the next page. Now checkout as you would elsewhere and await a confirmation email.
The official website had some teething problems when this deal launched on Tuesday morning, but apparently these have all been solved. That said, in the event you do run into trouble, contact [EMAIL="champmanstore@eidos.co.uk"]champmanstore@eidos.co.uk[/EMAIL] for help.

Get a Season Live add-on for £5[/title]
Whilst not necessary to play the game, the £5 Season Live add-on gives you a season's worth of month-by-month updates to in-game data, so the game follows what's actually going on in real-world leagues. This means you can 'start the game at key points in the season'. The data include latest scores, results, competition standings and player transfers amongst others.

Why's it doing this?
[/title]
We can only speculate really, but first of all, there's no doubt that 'pay what you want' deals are great from a marketing perspective. Trendsetting miserablists Radiohead couldn't have paid for better promotion than they got free by offering their (excellent) 'In Rainbows' album to fans for whatever price they wanted (though they were far truer to the message by starting the bidding at a flat 0p).
Secondly, by offering the game at such a low price, Eidos discourages people downloading it illegally over Bittorrents. Put simply, it makes the illegal download look like more hassle than just paying for the game legitimately. Note that the pre-order offer only extends to the download of the PC version, which is far and away the most likely to be pirated. Versions for other platforms will sell at regular prices, as will physical PC copies and downloads after 11 September.
[thanks]Thanks to So Mental for spotting and posting this deal below![/thanks]

Available today as a pre order pay what you want for the new Championship manager. Minimum payment is 1p plus £2.50 handling fee, but still cheap for a pc game. Only available until midnight September 10.

Please note you will have to download this game. You will not get a cd through the post. Therefore not ideal as a gift as either show them where its saved or put on a blank cd (if you have a cd/dvd recorder)
Also if you have slow internet connection it will take a long time to download as the file will be pretty big.
Still a good buy though. BARGAIN0 -
May well be a good price but tbh the game is not even close to football manager. Do not confuse this game with the SI games release, its a pale imitation made by the guys that used to work with SI before SEGA took over.If you find my post helpful please do not click thanks, instead please send the thanks to my paypal account.:beer:0

Having played the demo, it's shockingly bad, and I don't consider it worth £2.50.
Seriously, at the very least try the free demo first, you have plenty of time to see what you think about it before buying.
While there are a few good ideas, many of these have been very poorly implemented. The interface is ugly and poorly laid out, scouting is totally irrational (a lower league team in England can have 11% scouting knowledge of Argentina, but none of Wales, despite neither having funds), transfers are a mess (a player requesting £200 a week with a £1000 signing on fee rejects £1000 a week with no signing on fee), the data is inaccurate, etc, etc.
However, the clear worst feature is the match engine. There are several videos on youtube showing how easily it is exploited and confused, and just generally inaccurate. To cut a long story short, it's appallingly bad.

They have claimed to fix all these issues before release, but considering the scale of the issues and the timescale they have to achieve this (before they have to manufacture the CD's, etc), if you believe that, you'll believe anything.0 -
I remember the original Championship Manager 92/93 - way ahead of its time and scarily addictive.
I'm hoping for good things from this, and at £2.51 it's not much of a risk!0 -
