Hiya,
I'm after a new, decent spec laptop. I used to buy Dell, but haven't found their products or their support any good, so will try something else this time.
Does anyone know of anywhere that offers decent machines, prices and support?
Many thanks,
James

Hello jhodgski
Welcome to the MSE site.
I'll move your thread over to the 'Techie Stuff' board, where it should get more views and responses.
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

We run a PC shop and we direct people to acernotebooks.co.uk
Customer feedback is that they are very good and we also think they are reasonable priced.Just owe Dad £2500 for a new car

For value and quality, it's hard to beat Dell. Granted their Customer Service has gone downhill recently.
There's a thread The Great Cheapest Decent Laptop hunt which may help you.
It's difficult to say what's the best for your particular circumstances as you don't state your budget and what you'll be using it for.0 -
Acer have some excellently priced laptops, which you can get from:
comet.co.uk (you can have a look at them in Comet's shops if you need to)
laptopsdirect.co.uk
shopacer.co.uk
Hope this helps...0 -
Never had a problem with Dells, but haven't used their support much. At this price, I wouldn't care if the support was poor..

Hi JHodgski, I'm in the same boat. Endless research, head spins, no idea what to get. Dells ordered and returned after hours/days/weeks on 0870 to get a return no etc as in both cases the monitors were faulty. Went to Comet where an Intel rep told me to avoid Acers. I have also been warned off HP which is a pity as they do nice spec and haven't followed the herd to glossy screens which give you a headache, plus you can't see them in bright light.
Plus they have decent keyboards. Sony Vaios are for watching DVDs indoors, not for typing.
Don't know about the latest Dell 6400 or if it will still have the screen problem. It has a 1400 x 1025 res or something a bit weird. I want to run a 1280 x 1024 and that's hard to find in laptops which is   The Dell screen problems are at higher res so the Inspiron 1300 @ 1280 x 800 should be ok. But how quiet is it? Due to its being on offer, lots of owners of it on this forum so there should be some experts!
If you are looking for dual core and like me you can't wait (AMD bringing out their dual core laptops soonish I think) it gets even more complicated.
PC Pro recommends Evesham (Intel dual core) which I have never tried or seen talked about on these forums. Anyone else know about Evesham (will ask on another thread)
Then again, PC Pro keep saying "great PC for less than 850" in their reviews (how do they avoid paying VAT?!!!!) and the Dell they reviewed clearly didn't have the same lousy monitor I got which was fuzzy at most resolutions.
Prices of solo core laptops are going to be annoyingly low in a couple of months if, unlike me, you can wait.
People seem happy with Fujitsu's Amilo AMD one but they are going to discontinue it. The new ones are all Intel. If you are in London, you can go and play with them at Selfridges who amazingly have the best price I've seen on the FJS dual core 1536 - 900 pounds if the grey cells don't fail me
If you have found something amazingly good, please let me know0 -
All tft monitors are fuzzy if you don't set them to their optimal resolution.
I'd be careful about PC magazine recommendations, they seem to concentrate on their biggest advertisers..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
I was in the same bout as you, well actually I still am (so do let me know how you get on!
)
but i was directed to https://www.ebuyer.co.uk
I checked it out and they seem pretty good..
but the advice that I'd give you, is go into a pc shop like comet or pcworld etc and speak to someone face to face who knows what exactly they're talking about, and tell them what you need to do/use/have and they'll tell you exactly what spec you're looking for and maybe what models you might be interested in.
Then, you can shop online with some sort of idea of what you need, because its so hard finding a laptop, they all seem good enough!!
hope that helps

If you want someone who knows what they're talking about then I wouldn't go into Comet!
I've heard horror storys about the support but I've always used Mesh for my home pcs and my first laptop and found them to be reliable and well priced. Never needed to contact support but I have used the Mesh forum on another message board and found the Mesh representitive that posts on there to be very helpful.
If you want a bargain basic laptop though then the Dell Inspiron 1300 seems like a steal. Only had mine two days but so far I'm very impressed indeed. I'm still trying to figure out what the catch is!0 -
I've just aquired an Acer Aspire 5622WLMi from Laptops Direct, the same company that runs AcerNotebooks.co.uk.
The Acer TravelMate 4202WLMi (£689.95 inc VAT) has received several excellent magazine reviews in the past few months. With 512MB of RAM I was looking to upgrade to 1GB, which would cost £119 including VAT and fitting.
I looked at the Laptops Direct and found that this Aspire one was more suited to home use. It features 1GB of memory, a separate video card as opposed to TM4202's onboard and a 80GB hard drive. The Aspire 5622WLMi costs £769.95 in VAT from Laptops Direct and comes with Windows XP Home Edition, whereas TM4202 comes with Professional. For general home use I think that's fine and for the price I'd much rather have the benefits of RAM and better graphics.
The display is a widescreen one with a native resolution of 1280x800. It requires a bit of scrolling up and down where a squarer monitor doesn't. There is scroll button for scrolling left, right, up and down without using the scroll bars.0
