Gash in my front offside tyre!

hey peeps, i've been checking my tyres as I was inflating them the other day just checking tyre pressures etc but noticed a cut in the side of my front offside. the tyres are about a year old but i took a pic of it in macro mode so you can see it.
I'm a bit worried in case it could lead to a blowout or something - do you think it needs replacing? And more importantly is it under guarantee (bought last april) or will i need to pay for it?
any ideas as to how it could have been caused?? I can't think how something could appear at that position on the tyre
On the picture the cut is above the "3" of SP30 it's also circled in red.
I'd appreciate your advice guys

 Is it a tractor tyre? You've stetched the page.
Personally I wouldn't take the risk. Get it checked to be safe and sure.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

I think it looks OK but it's impossible to say for sure from a picture. The best thing to do is get somebody, preferably an MOT tester, to look at it.
It could have happened as a result of kerbing or running over something sharp, that kindof damage is actually quite common.0 -
If it were me I'd pop along to your local Kwik fit and get some advise, I've found them very helpful in the past and don't try and sell you something you don't need.
If its a manufacturing defect then you should be covered, if its the result of curb damage then you wont be.
Have you got any stone curbs with sharp edges where you drive, looks as if that may be what caused the damage? That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

You haven't been to our Vent Board then or you missed the threads on KF.
Spaceage,
(yeah I think I can just about see it !)
It is a nail hole or a glass bottle or something sharp. If it were me I'd ignore it, the most I would do is put it on the rear of the car. I would also change it to the spare before an MOT and change it back afterwards, otherwise it will be a fail and a waste of your test fee. Nothing to worry about.0 -

Surely if it would be a fail on an MOT then it should not be on the vehicle at all as it will be illegally on the road. Use it as a spare if you want, but don't run on it unless an emergency and change it, not worth your life.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
It would fail an MOT as its on the side wall, and it cann't be repaired. You could take it back where you got it from and they will send it away to be checked for you, if it is a fault you will get the money back for the tyre. It does look like it has been kerbed with being on the front though. As people have said you could keep it as a spare, if you drive at high speeds you might find that it will blowout on you.
Wherever you take it back, they will tell you that you need a new tyre.0 -

Thats sort of what I said, didn't word it quite right, did say if its on the vehicle,it would be illegal and to get it changed.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
The spare isn't in the MOT but by law it does have to be present, legal and inflated.
It depends how deep the damage is, which is why I said to ask an MOT tester to look at it. An MOT tester will know what's legal and safe and he'll have the benefit of seeing the actual tyre.0 -
I would use it irrespective of whether it would fail an MOT or not, that's just a personal choice by me, if I thought it was going to blow (it doesn't look like it - if anything it looks like it will deflate slowly) I would put it on the rear.
I'm not the sort who panics easily or overreacts to percieved safety risks. You can flame me and judge me if you like but I've had a blowout and it was nothing special, if it is on the rear the effect is minimal.
What I'm suggesting may be illegal but in reality there's no chance of being caught and there's next to no chance of any accident.0
