Hi,

Got myself a 6x6 greenhouse yesterday (lady no longer required it) and should be up within 2 weeks needs new screws 'w' & 'z' clips and need to replace 2 broken panes (done in trasport) and need a base for it.

so what things can you suggest i'm a total novice here i know you can get excellent results with toms and cucumbers but don't know where to start.

Any help?

my oh used railway sleepers to put the greenhouse on and has slabs for the floor but left a strip of earth at the side to put plants in and you would be better with some form of bench to put your trays on when you are potting up seeds etc, remember a greenhouse can get very hot in summer and you can buy liquid to paint on the outside of the glass to shade it , it washes off. you might need to keep the door open too to keep the air circulating

I was told it's best to use all paving slabs and use growbags.

we left a border because oh wanted to put in a peach tree and a grape vine, both were successful, i mentioned raiway sleepers as you can fix the g house onto them if you are in a windy area

Growbags make things very easy but don't turn out the best results. Because they're above ground they tend to get very hot and the soil can dry out. If you've got decent soil in your garden it's best to use that with some compost or manure or fertiliser etc...

    Oh lucky you :)

Enjoy it. I would try growing anything you like to eat. We have been growing chilli peppers for the last couple of years and my O/H makes chilli jam which is gorgeous with cheese. I grow masses of lettuce throughout the summer and tomatoes, both cherry and traditional ones.
We used an old pasting table, saves your back when you're potting things up and watering. I grew masses of stuff just in pots on the floor too.
Keep a chair in there too if you have room and then you can sit and watch the seeds grow :)

The Chilli Jam sounds great, would you be happy to share the recipie?

We grow Chillis, peppers, spring onions, leeks, shallots, horseradish.

I usually get cherry toms and grow these in hanging baskets which hang under my apple trees - last year we had masses of them!

I tend to use any bucket type items for growing on the greenhouse floor, I think that someone mentioned visiting florists etc to see if they are throwing out the buckets that their flowers normally arrive in - could try supermarkets for these too?

I tent to plant on (when big enough) my chillis in the garden though as they have more room to grow.

My uncle bought fertilizer in tubs years ago so I also use them to plant things in.

We have an old cupboard inside that was going to be thrown out that we use to store tomato food etc
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice

Sure, I'll get him to post it later. Its a work in progress so feel free to adapt as necessary to suit your tastes!!

We just had to buy some as we ran out and it cost £2.80  not very OS or MSE ~ maybe we should set up selling our own

    Chilli Jam

He uses this recipe but tinned tomatoes instead of fresh and just ignored the fish sauce!

If you look through BBC Food theres another recipe for chilli jam too.

Thanks guys, it's 6x6 which is ideal for my garden size. Ok might have a strip of proper soil if it's good enough.

Do you buy plugs or seeds?
