Aol sent debt collectors for an unknown debt

Just wondered if anyone has any advice for me. I had my broadband with Aol until jan2007 when i switched to sky. I was out of contract and after we got the mac code from them had no more contact with them at all. Then today received a letter out of the blue from a debt collector basically saying they have tracked us down (never moved and never changed my phone number) and have proof that we live here:confused:. They are demanding £80 from us and threatening court action My husband called to ask what is this for and they said we have to write in to find out. Aol won't speak to us because the account is closed. The letter states that they have had many attempts at contacting us and that we have ignored all correspondence. I can honestly say that I have had NO contact from them at all. I am just about to write a letter and wondered if anyone had any advice on how to tackle this. We are both quite upset because have never had any contact with a debt agency before.
thanks in advance.

  • I have just had a similar experience, down to the wording in the letter from the debt collector you mention and I am very distressed. I've never owed anything to anyone! I was with AOL briefly years ago but have heard nothing from them since cancelling then. Could you possibly tell me if you have managed to resolve this issue now? I am at a loss as to how to proceed.
  • Hi bunnygran. I have now managed to sort this out. The best advice I can give is to write a stern letter to AOL. Don't answer the phone to the debt collectors, they are not interested in any conversation unless it includes your credit card details. I called Aol again and they agreed within seconds that I didn't owe them money, they said they would contact the debt collectors. 3 weeks later I was stil receiving letters and phone calls from them demanding money. Eventually I wrote a letter to Aol to say that that i had written to watchdog and fair trading etc(which i had) and that they should sort this out immediately, Which they did. If you would like me to dig the reply letter out for you just let me know and I will find out who from AOL wrote back to me. I am disgusted with the way this was handled both by Aol initially and especially by the debt collectors as it wasvery distressing for us being hounded like we were, but I came to realise that even though the debt letters were very harshly worded and frightening. I don't atually now think that they would have taken it any further. Please don't answer the phone to these bullies though if you can ,as it was the conversations/ arguments that upset us the most. Let me know if I can be of any help to you and if you get it sorted.x

What happens if I have debt collectors from a passed debt from Virgin shall we say which I dont owe. I paid it all to date and they think I owe money so I write saying er These people have moved house and still the letters are sent out. So will I be found if I move into a new bought house? BEcause I am staying at a friends house right now. To say that I will never use Virgin services again they just cut thir own throats doing stuff like this with yours truly. Do I need to stay off the voting register or something?
