Hairdressers' costs

I'm note sure if this is the right board, so please bear with me if it's not.
I have quite long hair which doesn't need cut very often. When it does, I go to my local old fashioned hairdresser who charges £11.00 for a Cut and blow dry. Last week I knew I'd be in a rush and wouldn't have time for the junior to do the shampoo. So I washed it myself, didn't use any product - just let it air-dry while I got ready. He *refreshed* the hair with a water spray and put me through as a *dry* cut, saving £2.50 off the cost. I'm happy to do this again as I have arthritis in my neck and using the salon sink is uncomfortable.
Hope this is helpful to someone!

wow thats a good saving, I sometimes just get a dry cut myself, and always used to for my daughter. Now shes getting older though, she likes to have her hair dried by the hairdressers. She has really thick hair, and they always have to thin it out for her, but they still only charge us £10 each. Considering on there price list they say prices start from £10 each, I think we get off lightly, as we dont go there that often, usually leave at least 8 weeks between visits.

Hi Sue - I used to get a dry cut too, but my hair's curly and it never seemed to cut as well. This way I get the best of both worlds!

Oooh, don't get me started on hairdressers' costs. I live in London and the cheapest salon where I live charges £14 for a dry trim. My hair is all one-length and straight and it takes them about 10 minutes to cut it. I know hairdressers probably don't get paid much, but I do get annoyed when they look expectantly for a tip when I've just paid them £14 for a 10 minute trim. I bet other people go in there who take much longer because they've got layers and they pay the same - grrrr!0

Hermia - you're right, they charge an absolute fortune. I'm lucky to live in a village and to have found a local guy who charges reasonable costs and still manages to cut the hair well (have had nightmare cuts in the past due to inexperienced people cutting curly hair.) Just a thought - would it be worth checking out an old fashioned barber? Some of them will do trims a bit cheaper. Or what about the local college. I haven't chanced them - new hairdresser phobia's too strong - but I have friends who've been and had good cuts very cheaply. The only downside is that every little thing has to be checked by a supervisor so it takes hours. Oh, and my local one does French manicures for £3!!0

Local college does a wash, cut and blow dry for £5 and these are with year 3 students and are supervised.
Ive just sent of my voucher from this months Weight Watchers magazine for a free cut and blowdry...so just the cost of the mag (which my mum bought and sent voucher to me)...so in theory has cost me nothing. Just waiting on salon and date etc.

im lucky....i go to my mums house every 6 or 12 weeks(sometimes i miss a visit) when her hair dresser comes, she charges just £8 for my hair and both my dd's-they are 3 and 1 but both have long hair.
at the proper hairdressers around here they charge around £20 for mine and £8 each for the girls so a fab saving.
she was a proper hairdresser and used to work at the local hairdressers(indded she has cut mine and my mums hair since i was about 6  ) but left to go solo after having her children and has been doing that for the last 10 or so years.
we are soooooo lucky to have her-i hope she never stops doing it!!!0 -

I don't think the local barber will cut women's hair. To be honest, I wouldn't want my hair cut there. The place is filthy and full of strange middle-aged men in macs! I've noticed that a lot of young men go to the unisex salon where I go to have my overpriced haircut. The local college is not good either because they are not open on the weekends and I'm at work all week.0 -

Goodness, that's just so much money. I gave up getting my hair coloured when with a cut because it was costing £40. I don't feel so hard done by now! I now get a cut and blow dry at £17 and colour it myself. The result aren't as nice as when it is done at the hairdresser though.0
