Scottish Power quote -too good to be true?

Got a quote for gas and elec from Scottish Power today from tel sales team

Gas 4.348 for first 4872 kwh pa then 3.416

Elec 13.632 for first 900 kwh pa then 8.759

both prices excluding vat.

Not amazing but then i was told I would get discounts of up to £191.55 pa on top of this.I asked what 'up to' meant and how could I definitely get the full discount. She said it would be £159 for paying by dd and the remainder £16.80 and £15.75 for dual fuel and managing the account on line.

She said that i would definitely get the full discount and it would be attributed each month therefore reducing my paymt from £86 to £70.

Has anyone else come across this as it seems too good to be true and is not mentioned on their website?

  • All depends on how much you actually use.

Up to means nothing if you only use 4750 kwh gas & 750kwh electric. Not realistic I know, but sure you get my point.

Get a quote for total costs based on your actual usage for a full year.

If you don't know, phone your existing provider and ask for the figures, they'll probably ask you why you want them, telll them SPower offered you a deal. See if they offer you something to stay.

Ignore any offer from any company based solely on your existing payments.

    eg:
I'll offer to sell you a piece of string for £180. See if another member can offer you a better deal.

£16.80 p.a. (inc vat) discount is available to customers in the SP and Manweb former PES areas for customers on dual fuel & pay monthly by DD. (In other areas its £10.50)
(I think you need to be on a no standing charge tariff to get this - but I might be wrong. You seem to have been quoted a no standing charge tariff anyway)

Annual discounts of £5.25 for gas and £10.50 for electricity are available for using their online service (again, inc VAT)

However, I've no idea where the rest of the quote comes from.

I don't recognise any of those unit prices from the latest Scottish Power Prices booklet - they seem quite low.
Also, whilst SP offer discounts (but not those you mention) for quarterly paying customers who pay promptly or by DD, I don't think there are any discounts for those who pay monthly; instead they benefit from lower unit prices (but the unit prices you were quoted seem even lower than those)

It certainly does seem too good to be true.

If you are interested in proceeding I would suggest you ask for quote in writing detailing the tariff name, the unit prices and full details of how the discounts would apply before deciding whether you want to go ahead.

  • Just what I thought premier.

Anyway I phoned them back today on 0800233355 and they confirmed the above figures so I am waiting for them to come in writing now.

The guy said that the bills will be based on the above unit prices and that an annual discount of £191.55 divided by four ie about £47 will be applied to each quarterly bill - so just what i was told yeaterday. The tariff is called discount energy online and there are penalties if you leave before 30/6/10.

Still can't find any mention of the above discount online so awaiting the postman next week as I am still an unbeliever.

Thank you kippen for your reply i forgot to mention in my post that usage is gas kwh 17154 and elec kwh 5068

I found the tariff and the unit prices seem correct for NorWeb supply area. :)

I still don't see any mention of the discount for paying monthly by DD though.
Since this tariff requires you to pay monthly by DD, it would be strange if they offered you a discount to do so.

The annual discounts I mentioned earlier still exist, and appear to be granted pro-rata on a daily basis. (so you will get them quarterly, pro rata)

Using the figures you have quoted and adding VAT at 5%, your annual bill would be £980.62 which equates to Approx £82 per month, a little more than they appear to be telling you.

Still seems a good deal though and it would be great if you could update on this later.

Yes this is my concern too and I did find that odd when both the sales people said this. I even made the second one calculate my proposed bill today and he knocked off the full £191.55 off the annual bill so i will see what the paperwork says when it arrives and not believe it until then.

Tuggy - you are correct it should read the first 4572, sorry for typo as it was very late when i wrote the first post.
I should also have made it clear in my first post that the payments were based on my calculations of 14000 kwh gas and 4000kwh elec which is what i used up to April 2008. I then learned the revised figures 17154 kwh gas and 5068 kwh elec this morning when I rang npower to see if they could match the deal (which they could not).

I am sorry I did not make the posts clearer . You are correct with your figure of £82 pcm as this is what Scottish Power quoted the second time I rang with the revised consumption figures. Thank you for taking the time to work it out and reply

Take into consideration last winter was the worst for 15+ years. Chances are if you set your payments based on 08-09 usage for gas, it'll be too high.

I just did a quick comparison for the norweb region

found the cheapest deal was to have gas with Atlantic and electric with BG.

As you are in the Norweb area, I think you should only will get the £10.50 (not £16.80) discount for dual fuel too.

You are probably right. I will let you know how i get on when the postman finally brings the news!
  • Well the info finally arrived in the post. All tariffs as stated and discounts there apart from the £159 direct debit discount mentioned above. I phoned Scottish Power and was assured that it would be knocked off. The guy double checked this with someone too. I said that i was not happy to go ahead without having this in writing and he assured me that he would send an email to the relevant section who would send this to me in writing. Surprise surprise nothing received so phoned again and this time was told that

    1. it was not a discount but a saving against other plans which are not paid by direct debit

    and

    2. the savings were reflected in the lower unit price i had been quoted.

I am absolutely certain that this is a case of mis-selling. I was told by two different Scottish Power telephone sales people specifically that a total discount of £191.55 would be knocked off my actual bill. I even made then calculate the cost based on KWH and they knocked it off.

Needless to say i have cancelled the switch and have made a complaint to
Scottish Power about their sales people
