I am going on a day trip to Dublin next tuesday with some friends. We were planning to do the usual tourist attractions such as Kilmainham Gaol and the Guiness Store House.
Any tips on how to save money over there as I have heard it is expensive?

I have never rated the guinness storehouse, not worth the money - imo, kilmainham on the other hand is a great place to visit.
I like the bus tour, can jump on and off where you want and gives a good idea of places you may want to visit again
the museums have free entry - (collins barracks, natural history and archeology)
dont eat / drink on temple bar, over priced and over packed.. although sitting and people watching is very cheap

I was there a few weeks ago and holy c**p it was pricey! To give you an idea, a pint is 6-7 Euro in the Temple Bar area. A portion of chips from any ol' takeaway will set you back around 4 Euro. A cheap and nasty takeaway meal will set you back 8-10 Euro. When I went it was 1 for 1 Pound to Euro. It is slightly better now but not much. So brace yourself!I'm tight and I'm proud!

Before you leave the airport go the left hand side of the exit door and buy a Family Rambler bus ticket at the Dublin Bus kiosk, you don't need to actually have kids for this, costs around 11 Euros. This will do you all return on the Airport Express bus as well as any buses through the day but it pays for itself just for the airport express alone.0

I wouldn't go to the Guinness storehouse either, not worth the money or the time.
I'd avoid eating/drinking in the Temple Bar area - it's ridiculously overpriced!
too many comps..not enough time!0 -
I quite enjoyed Guinness Storehouse but we spent 4 days in Dublin.
I'd probably not do it if I only had one day though.
Kilmainham Gaol is (IMHO) a must.
The Hop on-Hop-off bus tour is a great way to see a lot of the city.
Take a look at Tripadvisor, they have a Dublin forum and you may get some advice of good places to eat.0 -
I liked the Guiness Storehouse too, it is expensive and is just outside the centre in a rougher looking area. It's true what they say though, the pint of Guiness you get at the end does taste better than a pint anywhere else, or I thought so anyway...
If you book tickets for the storehouse online you save money. I think its €15 each normally but you get it for €13.50 instead and this includes a pint of Guiness or soft drink at the end.
If you want to save money I would suggest sandwiches for lunch! We went to Bewleys for breakfast = €10 for a fry up(!) and then Queen of Tarts for lunch = €10 for a quiche(!). Both were good though.
The cheapest pub we went to was a stinky old mans pub with disgusting toilets and it was still dearer, or around the same price as say the Hilton or Radisson in Glasgow.0 -
M&S do a sandwich deal for around 3 Euro to take away, includes a packet of sandwiches, packet of crisps and a bottle of juice/water. Nice cheap lunch and we kept a couple in the hotel in case we fancied a snack.
Guiness Storehouse is what you make of it, its a self guided tour so you can take as long as you want and when you consider you get a pint in the price it isn't expensive at all. The Jamesons Distillery isn't too bad either, its a guided tour though and only takes an hour max and you get a free whisky at the end.0 -
I wouldnt go on the pleasure boat either, what a rip off, about 12 euros:eek:
for about an hour and you dont see anymore than you would see on a Dublin City Tour.
My OH and me went into a sit down fish and chip shop, had F & C, beans
2 cups of tea - £23. There are plenty of McDonald type places which are pretty reasonable, if youre only going for the day that should feed you okay. Have a good time.
Oh and by the way, ignore the beggars, (there is a lot of them in and around O'connel Street) they all have Mercs around the corner. I was told this by a Dublin man on the ferry going over their.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Went to Dublin for a day on Ryanair from Bristol last October. 1p each way for the flights, free lunch thanks to MSE and the M&S voucher from a well known insurance company. Thanks to a tip from MSE forum got the 'local bus' rather than the airport bus into town. Pity the bloody parking at Bristol for 1 day was 1500x more than the flight! Have a good look at the prices in Dublin it's always good for a laugh as long as you aren't paying them. Don't ignore the 'beggars', expressing your opinion will help relieve stress. Look how well built the Dublin beggars are. I spend 5 months a year in India and I can spot a real beggar when I see one - and there are none in Dublin. (there are non in the tourist spots in India either, they can't afford the bribes).0

Bob, dont understand? you said 'dont ignore the beggars' in your post?
then say there are no real beggars, was that a typo
edit - sorry, yes i understand now that i have re read your post about expressing your opinion lol
Actually 99% of the beggarswe came across were asianmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
