M42 Speed Cameras
Options
ok, this is the email doing the rounds at work. Dont know if its 100% true but nevertheless, it it is true then those M42 drivers, be careful
All,
I have been given some reliable information from a friend in the know.
As of the 1st April 2006 the new digital automated tracking system between junctions 3 & 7b on the M42 is scheduled to go live.
There are 276 Digital Cameras which have been set to 2MPH tolerance
You will not see any flash. The 1st you will know when you have been caught is the day the postman delivers the 60pound fine
Be careful out there
Apologies to those among you that I have already spoken to but feel free to share this with your freinds
Regards

Don't spend five pounds to dry clean a shirt. Donate it to the charity shop instead. They'll clean it and put it on a hanger. Next morning buy it back for two pounds.

Whether the cameras which are or are not there, it's enough to convince me to slow down - it's just not worth the risk. For anyone who hasn't been down the M42, there's overhead gantries with speed camera signs on, from what I can see, most don't have cameras on, but some random ones do. They operate variable speed limit too like on the M25.
There are CCTV type cameras at the side of the road, but I'm guessing that these are used to measure traffic flow and to inform the decision to switch the variable speed limits on - this could be wrong though as it's just how I guess the system might work.
Either way - unless you've got fake plates on your car, it's too much of a risk. It's deathly boring though, slowing down to 70 after just coming off the M40... :rotfl:0 -
THey are probably SPECS cameras. They time you passing one gantry, and then again passing another one further down the road. If you get there too quickly, you must have been speeding. Completely digital - the fine will land on your doormat...
SPECS cameras are usually small and yellow with bits on either side.
Have a look here0 -
I drive the M42 once a week. Firstly, they arent SPECs cameras. Secondly, they are most likely to only be operational when the variable speed limit is enforced (like on the M25 western stretch). At all other times, I assume they are switched off.If you found my comment helpful, please click the 'Thanks' button below :T0

Be aware though that the GPS speedcamera database does "finger" a SPECS camera on one of the gantrys. I'll make a note which one next time, it towards the M5 end.
And here's a link to the official Active Traffic Management Information.0 -
There was a simlilar story doing the rounds a couple of years back regarding new cameras along the M4. Thames Valley Police eventually issued a statement saying they were not speed cameras. If I remember correctly, they were part of the new big information gantries system so that people in the control room could monitor the traffic flow and to see that the new signs were displaying the correct info.0

If you have any another questions, feel free to ask and I will help as much as I can. This email isn't a hoax.0 -
Sorry, certainly looked just the same as all the other hoax Emails.
If you go back to the original post it says:As of the 1st April 2006 the new digital automated tracking system....Can I help?0 -
As far as I was aware, the digital automated tracking system has been in place for a few months now.
This is a pioneering scheme on the motorways, and specialists from all over the world have been to the site to see it. It has also been on the news during what I believed to be the launch of the tracking system showing how much it has had an effect with cars observing the speed regulations overhead. If more motorists did this on the M6 the traffic would not be so bad.
So, im going to slightly retract, this could be a hoax as I thought it was already in place ...
Also, for those unaware, I have seen 2/3 new speed cameras being set up on the M6 near to Keele Services if people would like to watch there speed in the area.0 -
Before someone jumps in and says you shouldn't be speeding anyway:shocked:
the system looks the same as the one on the M25, I set my cruise control to the speed limit and don't take the chance. It's not the fine but the points that are the big problem for people who drive a lot.
My radar detector beeps at some of the gantries and not at the others;)0
