My son had to reload windows XP on his PC.

When he attempts to re-load his Norton Internet Security from his CD it will not do so. He has a genuine disc with the correct Product Key.

Firstly any ideas on what the problem could be.

Secondly he has brought his PC to my house. I am on BT internet, he uses Tiscali. If tries to set it up using his PC on my internet will that cause a problem?

Try searching the Symantec Knowledgebase here.

Just remember to save the username and passwords for the BT and Tiscali accounts.

You should be able to log on to his account and visa versa as long as you both have the same service.

    ie Dial-up or Broadband.

Does the Norton CD spin up? Can you hear it? Does it make a clicking sound? Does it start to install at all then crash? Or will it not even bring up the installation process?
  • To be honest with you, that's a blessing in disguise. The best thing he could do would be to get rid of Norton Internet Security (which is horrendously buggy) and replace it with free and better programs like avast (to replace Norton AntiVirus) and Sygate Personal Firewall (to replace Norton Personal Firewall)

While he's at it, he may as well get his PC security sorted by getting a few other programs. See [1] or Computer Security-Free! & Viruses!
The true cost of something is what you give up to get it.

Yes the CD spins up and goes through most of the installation procedure, including entering codes. However it keeps coming up with messages saying taht the installation is not complete and giving error codes which are not shown on the Symatic site.

Ditto. I've recently got a new PC. I considered upgrading to the latest version of NIS for it. I'm now running AVG Free anti-virus program and ZoneAlarm firewall, both free to download.

It takes ages to start on my Windows 98 PC and has been known to crash out leaving the computer connected to the internet without firewall or antivirus.

I've also reinstalled it a couple of times, as suggested by the Symantec Knowledgebase, to fix problems, usually due to the fact that the updates won't work.

I've used Norton products since I got my first PC in 1992, and over the years I've been disappointed at the way in which the quality of software has gone down.

Important Notice: Effective November 30th, 2005 all Sygate personal firewall products will be discontinued. This does not affect Sygate's Enterprise firewall and endpoint compliance products, which will still be updated and supported.

Looks like Symantec have merged with Sygate!

Erhmm *cough* I don't suppose said machien has been connected to the internet at any point since he rebuilt it? Even for a matter of second to say download security updates? Because if it has then I will bet you a whole £ that it's been infected with a virus and one known issue with that is that the forst thing they attack is the installation of any major AV software...
Provided that he's not re-installed any files etc you might be better off re-formatting th HD again and installing Norton (or if you want any other AV software) and THEN connecting to the web for your updates :)

Also worth making sure that the system doesn't have any hard drive problems :) Why did he reformat in the first place?
