Tried in two Lidl's in the Bristol area (and an Aldi, just in case the op got'em confused!), couldn't find one, it's not on there website either. If anyone finds a link to enable me to buy one (or similar) on line please post.

If anyone has found one, or works/lives by a Lidl and is popping in today please post and let me know if you see one.

    Cheers,

    Hey eug,

When I click the link you posted, it didn't show the HD DVD player, but it did show a digital tv receiver.

Perhaps different offers are on at different stores?, but now the website won't let me change my local store.

Might have to give 'em a ring.

we brought this yesterday, but we had a problem playing some discs we had downloaded:confused:

Well I bought the silver version of this player for £32 when Lidl had them in originally (I could have sworn it was at the start of this year), and it's played everything I've thrown at it, except the hidef avi and mkv files from my new camcorder, which it isn't compatible with. I think for £19 it's an absolute steal.

Are you burning the files you've downloaded to disc or playing them off a usb stick? Obviously I've never downloaded copyrighted material, it's a crime, but if you were to copy them to a memory stick (say an 8GB Sandisk Cruzer) you might find it plays them fine.

I've also read on Google that every now and again users of the player have encountered lip sync errors on avi films (presumably their own material, otherwise they too are in breach of copyright). Some report that if you just pause and unpause the footage the sync problem is fixed.

As regards burning to disc, I've heard some people have had very good results on that machine with Philips DVD-R Full Face Printables, but that could just be pub talk.

Finally I remember reading about another "Knock-Off Nigel" who tried to connect a 500GB external USB drive to his player without success - it wouldn't load. As I recall he eventually got it to work by dividing it into two 250GB partitions, formatting the first one FAT32 (he formatted the second NTFS for data) and then while it loaded he had to keep pressing a button on the remote (the right arrow I think, but it could have been any button) to stop the screensaver kicking in.

Sorry to say I have no experience of the above issues, as I only use the player for retail and rental original dvds from legitimate sources.

    ;)

Can anyone say whether or not this is an upscaling player?

Yeah it upscales all the way up to 1080p. Also supports 720p/576i/480p and possibly some others, can't quite remember.

this has worked in the past, worth a try

To set it codefree follow these steps:

    1. Open tray
    2. Press 9 9 9 9
    3. Enter Region (9 = multi-region)
    4. Close Tray
    5. Turn player off and on
