I am also on IS, and I was told that I could earn up to £40. after this I wouldn't recieve IS.
It might be different though for others, I would call the office who will deal with your IS.
I don't think they can class anything you sell as included in what you can earn, if you get me, but it's probably best to check.
Hope this helps.0 -
if you are a lone parent on income support then you can EARN up to £20 per week. Above this figure they will start reducing your IS benefit pond for pound. If you are a couple on IS then it is £10 per week limit.
Selling your own property should not count as earnings i believe. You need a job in order to earn.Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problemsWell at least i learn something on the way

From IS20 - A guide to Income Support (IS20 Apr 2004)
Normal disregards
In most cases the first £5.00 of your earnings from part-time work is ignored in the Income Support calculation. For couples, the first £10.00 is ignored.
Higher disregards
For some people there is a higher earnings disregard. In the following cases the first £20.00 of your and your partner’s joint earnings are ignored:
if you are a lone parent
if you get a disability premium
If you are a carer and either you or your partner receive the carer premium because of this, you may also get the higher disregard of £20.00.
With regard to selling things on Ebay if these are ONLY your own personal possessions this would not infringe the earnings rules. If you were buying stuff to put on Ebay to resell then you would be regarded as running a business and I have heard of folk having their benefit stopped and having to explain their ebay trading history. My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

It won't be any different for others, the higher disregard is £20. Perhaps you are in a couple and thought you could earn £20 each or something? The couple disregard is £10 as stated in the other posts.Selling your own property should not count as earnings i believe. You need a job in order to earn.
If you sell your property then you have capital which would also be counted in an income based benefit such as Income Support. You would be expected to live on the money you made from selling the house.Torgwen.....................

Hi
Thanks all for that, I get the High rate of DLA so would I be allowed the £20 per week? ???
So selling personal items are OK, I dont plan to make loads of money, just to get back something would be nice, and it wouldnt be a regular weekly thing.
I just want to make sure Im not doing anything wrong. The things i would be selling is bric-a-brac, second hand clothes etc etc...nothing exciting :-/
I would accept cheques only anyway and get them paid into my bank account, so they would have full access of what comes in and would keep records etc.
Thank you all so much for your help and anymore please let me know
Have a nice Xmas!!

I am afraid the maximum earnings disregard is £20. No concessions for couples.
I've re-read my post and it looks a bit like I am argueing with Fran. I'm not. I'm trying to emphasise you can only have a maximum of £20 disregard whatever your circumstances. So a couple with a Carer premium could get a total £20 disregard but this is no different from a single person with a carer premium. You can't combine the earnings disregards to exceed the maximum £20.
If benefit claimants only lost benefit at the same rate as the Highest rate taxpayers there would be a lot less disincentive for the lowest paid benefit claimants to get back to work. As it is earnings over the disregard lose benefit at £1 for £1. There would be outrage if this rate of taxation applied to earnings over £100.000 but it's considered no disincentive to the lowest paid.My weight loss following Doktor Dahlqvist' Dietary Program

Maddie,
If you receive DLA you can earn whatever you like as it is not a means tested benefit. It is a benefit for people with care and/or mobility needs - to help with the extra expense.
If you receive Income Support however, this is a means tested benefit and that is when the rules apply about how much you can earn or how much income and capital you can have before your benefit is reduced.Torgwen.....................

I'm a single parent of a 12 year old. Back in April his school asked me if I'd like to apply for a position of a playground supervisor in the school. It's 6 hours pw, I got the job and started in May.
I advised the benefits agency of my change in circumstances and was told to take in my wage slip once I'd my first wage.
I get the first £20 each week and the rest is deducted from my IS which only comes to about £7pw.
but the bonus of working in a school is you still get paid through the holidays as the wage is staggared throughout the year
hope that helps0 -
