washing machine temp

i've just got a new washing machine, but the 40 deg wash i would have done in my old machine used to take about 45 min but in the new machine it takes 115min!
There's a 30 deg wash that takes 30 mins and a 30 deg wool wash that takes 50mins....do you think i'd be better off using one of those programmes, or won't it get the washing clean?
I'm using a couple tbsp of washing powder/soda crystals mix in all my washes, but i just wondered if anyone else always washes at 30 deg and if its okay

I wash almost everything at 30 degrees with powder/soda/vinegar - only really dirty stuff gets washed at 40 degrees, but then I'll normally put that on a longer wash too.
You could always try it for a couple of washes to see what it's like - if the stuff doesn't come out clean just stick it back into the washer and do it again.

some washing powders don't seem to dissolve well at 30deg, so you end up with streaks of white powder on the clothes. We had that problem with Ecover. But then you just change powder0

has your machine got an economy setting or a quick wash
they are usually 45 mins at 40 degreesI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards. it's got a 'quick&cool' wash which washes at 30 deg for 30min...d'ya reckon that'd be ok to wash school uniforms, tshirts jumpers etc on? then use a hotter one for towels
i had my last machine for 10yrs and just put EVERYTHING on number 4!!!!0 -
I would suggest trying it. It sounds ok to me but you need to be happy with the results I guess. I was everything on 40 degrees but this thread has got me thinking....I'm going to give 30 degrees a go myself and see what happens!Tess x

I'd used liquid - a few years ago our machine was compleatly blocked by unused powder - it took me a couple of hours to dismantle and fix - since then we've used liquid - apparently it does the same to the drains etc.0 -

My washing machine manual recommends doing a 'maintenance wash' every so often, which is running it empty on the highest temperature (I add some soda crystals and vinegar to the drawer). I do this every 4-6 months, but my machine only gets used 3-4 times a week, so others may want to do a maintenance wash more frequently. I think the point of this is to combat the type of problem you described (at least, I hope so!).Sealed Pot Challenge 5 - #1742 :j0 -

well the clothes look cleanso i think i'll just use that prog for things that aren't too soiled...i'll just bung a bit of oxy-clean in with the powder/soda crystals just to be on the safe side

Could it be that your old machine filled from the hot and the cold water supply, and the new one is cold fill only? They all seem to be nowadays
and this does add time to the cycle, as obviously it has to heat the water up from cold before it starts.
You're lucky if yours only takes 115 minutes - a 40° program on mine takes two and a half hours if I want an extra spin  .I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe
