Trip to Durham on Tuesday , to look at Uni with daughter , have been overwhelmed with stuff- work, 18th Birthdays... blah blah but have looked at train fares today and am horrified.

Has any kind person out there got any ideas about cheapest route!

Thanks !

  • Try a route via London using Megatrain (Megabus.com): Southampton Waterloo £16 each way on Tuesday 24th then see what deals you can get on the East Coast Mainline. Worth a try?

    What about flying?
You can fly to Newcastle from Southampton with Flybe and then train to Durham?

It would seem a sensible option. But don't forget that the metro from Newcastle Airport to Newcastle station takes the best part of an hour. Even though the train from Newcastle to Durham only takes about 15-20 minutes.

Then, of course, the university is on the opposite side of Durham to the railway station.

If this trip horrifies you, think how many times your daughter will be horrified at the length and cost of the journey for each of the 9 terms. I know that Durham is a good university but so is London and Bristol and they are much nearer Southampton.

Realistically when she is travelling home she will have to get a train to London, and then change to come out to Southampton.

Take a look at advance purchase train fares first before she decides to go there. If you want her to come home you'll probably end up paying that yourself..

    Does it????

I know from Central to Fawdon takes 17-19 minutes (mum lives near Fawdon)
Fawdon to Callerton Parkway is about 10 minutes (used to work at Callerton Parkway, Metro was at 6.40 was at work for just before 6.55)
Then about 5-7 minutes from Callerton to Airport.

Thats about 35 minutes - not that long!!!!!! Or has it changed??? If so could someone let me know as we're going to the Falcons v Tigers game at Kingston Park on Friday and we dont want to miss the start of the match!!!!!!
