UK Holiday industry ILL-Prepared

Having spent the day out in St Ives, Cornwall. I wonder if the industry is geared up ready for the return of the good old British holiday?
They say with the recession that people will travel in this country. I know it's still March but if yesterday was anything to go by, this country is not going to make it!
It was a warm sunny day and people were heading to the beaches. So were we. Thought we would take the train as it's cheap enough and makes a change.
1. Train we wanted was cancelled (no reason given) Had to wait 45 minutes until the next one
2. Branch line train was one carriage only. It was as full as the Tube in rush hour. (You would think that some one with a brain might say....."Hmmmmm it's a nice sunny day I think people might go to the beach, lets put an extra coach or 2 on". No stupid GWR)
3. Despite the very busy town and sun. Many shops shut at 1pm (half day)
4. The woman in the chip shop was rude and were not geaed up for the potential numbers of customers. (Again no forward thinking)
5. I wanted a coffee in the sun on an outside table at 3pm. The cafe shut so it could get ready for the evening diners. What? They could have made 100's on potential afternoon cream teas
6. The seagulls were viscious and need to be culled. They were swooping and stealing ice creams and pasties from peoples hands. Terrified children ran for cover. Not a good start to the season.
Apart from that It was a beautiful day and worth coming down this way. But I hope we get out act together before Easter !

The UK holiday industry has a golden opportunity to shine this summer and turn around our shabby depressed seaside towns.
The £ has collapsed against the € making foreign travel expensive.
If we get the weather it could be a great summer in the UK for all.
Of course what will probably happen is rip off prices crowded roads accomodation not up to standard and a grab as much money as we can attitude by everyone from ice cream sellers to seaside landladies.
Have a good one.0 -

N9eav - I think the train problem is going to be worse in Cornwall, because as you know we were all driving donkeys six months ago!
I agree with you on every point (especially the seagull culling) and also think the holiday industry will not be anywhere near up to scratch this year :mad:We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret and disappointment0 -
Agree totally with OP - Pembrokeshire, like Cornwall should be geared up for tourism to be its main 'industry'. But we're not for all the reasons you describe, in fact I think we're even worse!"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

The middle of March.
The weather in the UK is normally at best overcast and chilly
The forecasters cannot even with the equipment they have predict much more than same day.
Less than 6 weeks ago we were under 5 inches of snow.
Todays 'predicted nice day' is overcast and cool.
The one day that the sun has shined and the wind has come off the land not the sea and like the O/P I took the family to a 'very busy' Hunsatanton in Norfolk where there is a family owned Static home 1/2 mile form the town.
To my surprise ... Cafe's were open, Chippies were flat out,Amusements were up and running ( normally takes to Easter to open). It was a bonus day for punters and business' alike.
I do think being a bit harsh on business owners /train companies to expect to turn it on just like that.
The Uk resorts are what you make it always have been always will be ..Sun shines its best place in the world if its cool then its nasty and boring and costs a fortune to entertain yourself.
By the way even got onto the beach and spent 45 minutes watching some people on jet skis.
I am sure the UK will be as prepared as ever for the onslaught of tourists that is expected ...like they have been for the last 15-20 years but sadly either the great weather or the crowds has turned up and so many of the B & B's and small business' have gone down the pan"Man invented language to satisfy his deep need to complain."

I suppose, but it's been warm and sunny for over a week here and stable enough to get it right. When times are difficult you have to be ready and take the opportunities.NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -
I agree, it may be March but its been nice for over a week, great time to cash in.
