Use London transport? Find alternative journeys in case your usual mode's suspended

3 March 2009

What's this about?

There's a cool little website, London Tube Journey Planner, that, in a matter of seconds, will give you up to date travel information on all of London's public transport plus alternative routes if your usual mode's defunct.

Don't be fooled by the name; info's available on not just the tube but buses, trains, trams and the DLR as well.

What's so good about the site?

It's a lot more user-friendly than TfL.gov.uk as it gives full instructions including a detailed, interactive map, plus how many zones you may be crossing along your travels; so it's pretty darn handy. Journey lengths and how long each leg of the route will take are given too.

Admittedly the site's layout is rather clunky and could be better designed, but at least all the information's accessible in a flash and you don't have to click through from page to page to find all the info you're after - something that's extremely important when rushing out of the house or if you're in a fluster at the station because your usual train's been cancelled!
If you know of other useful transport websites, please post the links below to help other MoneySavers

Yeah you will. Mad drivers, cyclists pulling out in front of you. Motorcyclists zooming past thumbing their nose at you :D I love cycling :T:j

    I hope that isn't a 2-stroke moped that creates 30x more cancer-causing chemicals than a huge 4x4 car.

Emissions standards for moped and motorcycles are much more strict in India and Thailand than they are here.

Why not get an electic motorbike?

Hmmm. First journey I put in there gave me wrong directions. Not very impressed...
  • Thought it would be ideal on my mobile but sadly when you scroll down through the stations it stops at B. :(

    The website seems totally useless.
I inputted the journey Eltham - Brunel University, just because it happened to be a journey I made today.

It took me by bus to Hayes in Kent, from where I was magically transported to Hayes and Harlington station across the other side of London(the similar name must have confused it).
It then put me on a U4 bus, and told me to get off nearly half a mile before the university. However, that's the bus I ended my real life journey on, and it actually stops at the university.

I tried slightly amending my departure point, but the directions still went very wrong.

I won't be asking this site for any help in future.

certainly gives "alternative" routes. Totally bizarre. Also no option for specifying a time of day. I'll stick with TfL. May be slower, but at least the information is accurate and usually sensible.

I wish there was a journey planner website that allowed you to specify which zones you want to avoid. I tried looking up a journey from Canary Wharf to Bromley, which can be easily made with a Zones 2-3 travelcard (DLR to Lewisham, then bus to Bromley.) All the journey planners I've tried take you through Victoria Station, which requires a Zones 1-5 travelcard at twice the price.

Have just had a play with it and it is shocking.

Do people not test things before they are posted to hundreds of thousands of people via this website and millions more through email? Does MSE need to make a vacancy for a researcher and tester?
